A WEEKEND WELL SPENT MAKING PRINTS!

Last Saturday and Sunday was our Nancy Luton Printmaking Education Fund Workshop at Red Bird Press! We had such a fun time bringing together a group of enthusiastic artists for a hands-on printmaking experience led by the talented Lauren Christlieb, owner and founder of Red Bird Press.

Established in 2020, the Nancy Luton Education Fund honors Nancy’s incredible generosity and dedication to Houston’s printmaking community by creating opportunities for students to explore and expand their artistic skills.

A big thank you to Lauren, Red Bird Press, and everyone who participated for making this workshop such a success! We love seeing the next generation of printmakers getting their hands in ink.

HOUSTON SEEN/SCENE: First, a shoutout to Jordan Bolduc and Jailyne España, the talented young curators behind PrintHouston’s ThinkINK 2026 members’ exhibition at The Silos at Sawyer Yards!

While I was there, I also wandered through ClayHouston’s Bayou Mud 2026 and photographed four ceramic works that caught my eye. Featuring functional and sculptural pieces by Houston-area artists, the exhibition draws inspiration from our bayous and the transformation of earth, water, fire and clay.

Swipe through to meet Jordan and Jailyne, and some of the artists in ThinkINK, then see a few of my favorite artworks (including one by Susan Budge) from Bayou Mud.

WORKSHOP
Two-Day Intaglio: Line Chemical Etching Workshop
Dates: Saturday & Sunday
October 3rd & 4th, 11AM - 4PM
(5 hours each day, with coffee/lunch breaks)
708C Telephone Rd. Houston, TX 77023
www.redbirdpresshtx.org | @redbirdpress.htx

In this two-day workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of intaglio printmaking through line chemical etching! Working with a 4×6 inch copper plate, you’ll learn how to prepare and transfer your image, etch your plate, ink it, and pull your own intaglio prints.

• No previous printmaking experience is required. All materials and equipment will be provided, including one 4×6 inch copper plate.

• Come With Your Image Ready!
You’ll want to arrive with a black-and-white image or sketch with lots of line work. Think hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and using lines to create texture, depth, and dimension - the more lines, the better!

• This workshop will focus exclusively on line etching, there will be no tonal areas, solid gray, or flat black values etched into the plate. Your image should be black and white and designed to translate well into line work.

Kathy Gurwell, Houston Based Papermaker, Presents Two Films on Handmade Paper in Conjunction with PULLED X 2 Exhibition.

1st Floor Lobby
HOUSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY-
CENTRAL LIBRARY
500 McKinney St, 77002
www.houstonlibrary.org/bblp

Double Feature Films Shown on
AUGUST 1st, at 2 pm and AUGUST 8th, at 12 pm

Kathy Gurwell, from Fine Hand Made Paper, will screen two documentaries on papermaking in conjunction with PULLED X 2, the current paper and printmaking exhibit on display.

The first documentary is Echizen Washi by Japan’s Center for Ethnological Visual Documentation. The film follows the complete papermaking process, illustrating how raw, natural materials are transformed into exquisite washi paper. This hour long film on Japanese papermaking is an artistically created documentary on papermaker Iwano Ichibei, designated a living national treasure in 2000. He is the 9th generation in a line of Echizen washi craftsmen working in the Echizen region. The Iwano family has been keeping the Japanese art of making washi alive in Echizen by passing down the tradition and skills across the generations.

The second is the Oscar nominated documentary short, The Mark of the Maker is a documentary about Twinrocker Paper Mill. Established by Kathryn and Howard Clark, Twinrocker was pivotal to the renaissance of hand papermaking in America. They met in graduate school at Wayne State University in Detroit, she working toward a master degrees in Fine Art Printmaking and he toward a degree in Industrial Design. It was during those years, 1970-1972, when they realized there was no handmade paper being made in America and that people had to import fine papers from Europe. They decided to change that. Twinrocker Handmade Paper began in San Francisco in 1971. Then in 1972, Kathryn and Howard Clark relocated to Brookston, Indiana where it thrives today.
