We had a great weekend of training in Oklahoma City! Thank you to @midamericafoolsokc and @firemedjlo for the opportunity and trust to present No Good Dudes Leadership on Day 1 and Hands On Search Operations on Day 2. We had great conversation with engaged firefighters and lots of quality reps that will make a difference. Also great to spend time with and share the drill grounds with @kevin_pfluger_ @hortonsandhunt @hardknoxsunday and continue to build meaningful relationships with people who truly care. Training for effective search includes training with contents, furniture, clothes, blankets, pillows and challenges that will be encountered during actual operations. Some things to consider when training for search in a room include:

1. Use real furniture and contents whenever possible. Thrift stores and yard sales are great places to find things to use.

2. There is a difference between speed and thoroughness. Both are important to the outcome and require practice.

3. Maintaining orientation in a room is not always easy. Having a thought process and systematic approach for body positioning and tool placement will help build confidence and competence.

4. Isolating and ventilating rooms should be practiced and implemented whenever possible. Practicing to decrease toxicity and increase visibility will help improve conditions for both victims and firefighters.

5. Victim removal in rooms with furniture requires practice and discipline. Sweeping with hands, sifting through debris, feeling for contour and weight, checking above and below beds and rolling cribs all require repetition and care.

6. Change the variables. Changing things like layout of furniture, contents and victim number or location helps create realism and accuracy.

Organizational and operational impact is the by product of leadership, training and personnel development. Over the last few weeks we had a chance to work with @northernazfire and deliver three full days of training. We witnessed participation and engagement from Battalion Chiefs, Captains, Engineers and Firefighters all striving to learn, improve and be the best asset they can to the community and the organization. The morning consisted of search lecture, hands on victim removals and room search techniques with an afternoon session of engaged conversation about company level leadership. Thank you for the opportunity, the hard work and the newly formed relationships. The people you serve should be proud!
