There’s a reason we still go to the roof.

The job changes. Buildings change. Tactics evolve.

But there will always be work that requires someone willing and capable of getting into position and doing it.

Stay capable.

The fire service has never been busier. Programs, committees, reports, emails, meetings, projects—the list of ancillary responsibilities continues to grow. We can never allow the noise to become more important than the mission.

The public expects us to show up prepared, competent, and willing to go to work. Train with a purpose. Know your job. Take care of your crew. Take care of the public.

We can never become so consumed with running the fire service that we forget why the fire service exists.

“So shines a good deed in a weary world”

Chief Gordon has seen a lot and has done a lot in his career in the fire service.

The most important thing that he values over anything…is family.

Throughout his travels and speaking engagements, he talks about the importance of family and doing the right thing for them.

Chief Gordon met a young man who needed a family more than anything.

His wife saw that before anyone else and they developed a bond that blossomed into them becoming a family.

It wasn’t easy…they had their ups and downs…but through love, patience and determination they all came through it better on the other side.

Rodney is in the Marines, promoted multiple times and is currently working on his Law degree…his goal is to become the First Black Governor for the state of Texas!

Thank you Chief, for being so open and raw with your experiences.

Man…no deep message needed.

Dylan Brown of @theunmaskedfiremen really hit it with this interview.

Dylan definitely is an old soul, he is well grounded and tuned into the environment around him.

He really hits on being humble…staying focused on you and what you can control.

I really enjoyed having this conversation with Dylan and listening to how humble he is even with all of his accomplishments.

It’s up to us as senior members to teach the new generation.

My goal is to teach new firefighters the importance of taking care of themselves and staying healthy.

A lot of them don’t know programming or training, they just know to get in gear and do what they’re told in the academy.

YOU CAN BE FIT AS HELL AND STILL GET HUMBLED BY YOUR GEAR.

🫵🏼🏴‍☠️🤙🏼

In one study, VO2 Max was 17.3% lower in full PPE and SCBA than in pt clothes.

And that’s before you go to work, dragging a line, searching a room, climbing stairs, or pulling a downed firefighter out.

Your gear traps heat.
Your pack adds load.
Your breathing is affected.

And you still have to move efficiently, manage your air, think clearly, and PERFORM.

That’s why I believe in Gear Work.

Build the engine, then learn how to use that engine with gear on.

Not because harder is always better.

Because the environment changes the demand, and you need to know how to perform when it does.

TRAIN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT YOU WORK IN.

FATIGUE CHANGES MORE THAN YOUR SPEED.

🫵🏼🏴‍☠️🤙🏼

As fatigue builds, movement becomes less efficient.

On the fireground, inefficient movement costs you:

More effort.
More energy.
More air.

Now add full PPE and SCBA, limited visibility, a downed firefighter, and a crew trying to solve a problem under pressure.

Strength matters, but strength alone isn’t enough.

You must be able to move with purpose, execute the skill, control your breathing, and make good decisions when you’re already tired.

That’s why firefighter fitness and firefighter skills can’t be trained as two separate things.

Build the physical capacity.
Develop the skill.
Learn to move efficiently.
Then put it all together under realistic conditions.

Because the fireground doesn’t care how well you perform when you’re fresh.

TRAIN TO PERFORM TIRED.
