I don’t know which other direction the wind will take the story of this 400 year-old tree and I am not sure I will ever have the words to express the growth it’s been. To be given space to be experimental as the visual language of @wheremymemorybeganfilm is to see how beautiful the story of this tree is and how timeless and urgent it is all at the same time, in the larger context of invisibility of most black diasporic stories x histories.The way my first little short of 9 mins is finding echo, home and love is deeply humbling. I’m so grateful for the creatives I collaborate with in 📍 Freetown. I flew back with tall posters of our film and (surprise) a 2nd short film that we were initially shooting when the tree fellx then became taken by its story, the urge to tell it. We are not as funded so we shoot everything in btw our daily obligations bc our stories will be told. & look at the places it is going & the conversations it is stirring. I want a world where I can go to festivals with all my cast and crew, of African societies that host more film festivals to contribute further to the global visual conversations. 🥲 Eid Mabrook, so much to be grateful for.❣️WHERE MY MEMORY BEGAN is an experimental short film starring an elder, Elder Ballu, as she tries to remember a 400-year-old Cotton Tree that fell. 📍 Freetown screening is NEXT! frames from Rio where my short film, We Will Be Who We Are, was screened amongst stunning films at the powerful @centroafrocariocadecinema - the Encounters of Black Brazilian cinema, where I felt seen, heard, understood and found echo in many. It feels strange to celebrate as I swim counter current in what’s been feeling like an ocean of discord, tormented by what is becoming of everything but I remain filled with gratitude for these moments, these smiles, the stories 💛💚♥️ by @priscillia_pkh
