Saturday in the Highlands .The air smells of earth and dry parchment coffee and the particular quiet of altitude at 2000m. Somewhere on a hillside of Marawaka, a garden is growing something exceptional, a farmer is drying coffee that is golden like this.

Brother and sister, Simon and Natalie escorting their coffee to sell in Goroka, because the road is dangerous ie hold up by bandits we have to bring the farmers to Goroka with us to buy their coffee. We pay for transport and offer them a premium of factory door price, in return they offer good quality coffee.

New here?
Here’s what we do: For years we've grown this coffee one family at a time in this remote community of Marawaka to produce the best coffee in Papua New Guinea to roasters who care about where their coffee comes from.
From 0.5kg sample bags to full container loads, every lot is traceable to the village it came from.
Today, we're making it easier for the world to find this gem of a coffee and that starts with sourcing inquiries now open, link in bio.
DM us for origin samples, pricing and availability. Link in bio for the longer story. #marawakacoffee

A Toyota land cruiser with a load of coffee bags .This is the old Menyama road, the road we used to carry coffee on, of course this was taken a couple of years back. We have come a long way the roads are definitely much better and the picture quality is better now . Imagine the bad weather, the bad roads and the bad prices, it wasn't worth it, but everyday rural entrepreneurs persisted regardless. And that's why for me it's very important to connect the effort into production with markets that fully appreciate the uniqueness of our coffee.

I arrived at the Goroka Show very late and most of the traditional singing groups had already left but these were some of the few pictures I was able to get in the time I had.
The Goroka Show is held every September on the weekend of the independence day of September 16. Its older than the country, it's well known, loads of tourists come in and it's fascinating for the outsider but most locals are very critical of it saying that cultural groups are not putting enough effort into showing up with authentic bilas ie decorations and it's true you can see slightly modern additions which brings into question the larger idea that most communities are slowly loosing their identity by not preserving their local cultural practices. Bilas is slowly becoming a dying art form as the older generations pass away . by @prisillamanove

Did you know that397,000 households depend on coffee as their main source of income in Papua New Guinea?

The industry provides income for up to 2.5 - 3 million people, of which, 55% of sampled highlands households produce coffee. This is mostly in Eastern Highlands and Western Highlands Province where much of the economy is reliant on coffee.

For the last week, this section of the road on the Menyama part of the highway, has been blocked and thus has affected supply of coffee. The conflict arose as a result of a domestic situation between a wife and a husband where the husband had been physically assaulting the wife and the wife’s people retaliated and assaulted the husband. The mans people ie his village than blocked the road and want compensation to be paid else the road will remain blocked. And so now the womans people are mobilizing resources to pay compensation to the people, it just so happens that i would be considered as part of the womans community and thus am expected to contribute to this although i am not from here but by association i have ties with the Marawaka community .
There is no police presence and so the enforcement of law by police takes days as they need to be called in, most times community leaders have the arduous task of mobilizing communities and facilitating for mediation and peace and this sometimes can take a while.
It is very complex dealing with rural communities, so many moving parts by @prisillamanove

More bilums. Every region in Papua New Guinea has a specific bilum or basket distinct to it, made from materials found in the area, with markings and patterns symbolic of distinct cultural icons and its lores. by @prisillamanove

Apart from coffee the alternative source of income for many women in the region of Marawaka are fruits such as oranges and tapa cloth, which is the traditional garb that women wear over their heads and is in high demand.
