Your GSA doesn’t have to do it alone.

P-SAP, the PRISM Student Ambassador Program, connects LGBTQ+ student leaders across South Florida with the community, resources, and support they need to strengthen their clubs and make an impact on campus.

Through P-SAP, you’ll connect with other student leaders, build your leadership and organizing skills, access PRISM resources, and get support as you grow your GSA or LGBTQ+ student organization.

Whether you’re already leading a club or looking to take the next step, there’s a whole community ready to grow alongside you.

Open to eligible high school and university students in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade.

A period shouldn’t become the reason a student misses part of a lesson, has to search across campus for a pad or tampon, or spends the rest of their day worried about something as basic as managing their period.

That’s why @thee_anaya , founder of @promote.her , @youthactionfund and PRISM, are asking our community to show up with us on October 13.

For the past several weeks, we’ve been talking about what menstrual equity could look like in Broward County Public Schools, and the answer can be remarkably simple: when a student gets their period, the product they need should be accessible. They should be able to take care of themselves privately, with dignity, and get back to learning.

Now it’s time to bring that conversation directly to the Broward County School Board.

Showing up matters because it reminds decision-makers that students, families, educators, and community members are paying attention, and that access to basic menstrual products is an education issue worth taking seriously.

📅 October 13
📍 Broward County School Board Meeting

Join Promote Her, Period. and PRISM, with support from Youth Action Fund, as we come together to advocate for greater menstrual equity in Broward schools.

Periods don’t stop for school. Access shouldn’t either. by @prism.fl

Some of the best conversations about voting don’t start with a speech about democracy. Sometimes they start with, “Wait, I can update my address here?” or “Florida has closed primaries?” 🗳️

We had plenty of those conversations during our voter registration drive with Lambda at St. Thomas University, where students came by with questions, hesitations, and a genuine curiosity about how they could make their voices count in the communities they now call home.

Some were still deciding whether voting felt worth it. Others were ready to move their registration to South Florida so they could have a say in what happens around them. A few learned about Florida’s closed primary system for the first time and decided they wanted to update their party registration so they could participate more fully in future elections.

But what made the day especially exciting was watching students register other students. 💚

Our volunteers learned how to help their peers navigate voter registration, put their own knowledge into practice, and did something that can actually be pretty vulnerable: walking up to someone you know, starting a conversation about civic participation, and risking a “no” because getting even one more person involved is worth asking.

That’s what youth civic engagement can look like. Not just casting a ballot when Election Day comes around, but learning how our democracy works, helping someone else understand it too, and realizing that participation can spread from one conversation to the next.

Huge thank you to @stulambdalaw and every student who registered, asked a question, volunteered, or stopped to talk with us.

If Pride Month is in June, why does LGBTQ+ History Month happen in October?

The answer goes back to 1994, when Missouri high school teacher Rodney Wilson had a pretty simple but powerful idea: LGBTQ+ people deserved to see themselves in the history they were learning. October was chosen intentionally, in part because students were in school, making education central to the month from the very beginning.

More than 30 years later, there is still so much of that history many of us never encountered in a classroom. We might know Stonewall, Harvey Milk, or the rainbow flag, but LGBTQ+ history stretches far beyond the stories that became the most recognizable. It lives in protests and politics, art and nightlife, HIV/AIDS activism, student organizing, chosen families, community spaces, and countless people who found ways to care for one another and create change.

So this month, PRISM is asking a question: How did we get here?

Throughout October, we'll be following the people, places, movements, and ideas that shaped LGBTQ+ life as we know it, including some stories that happened much closer to home than you might expect.

Because learning our history isn't only about looking backward. It can help us understand the communities we've inherited, the progress people before us fought for, and the history we're creating right now.

So, what changes when LGBTQ+ young people actually get to learn their history?

Let's find out. Happy LGBTQ+ History Month by @prism.fl

You know that book you’ve been meaning to read? Yeah, us too.

So we’re starting the official PRISM Book Club, and we’re kicking things off with Dean Spade’s Love in a F*cked-Up World, a book about how we build stronger relationships, communities, and movements while practicing care, accountability, and collective action.

And before you start stressing about finishing the reading: this is a casual book club. Seriously.

We’ll meet throughout October and November for relaxed, community-focused gatherings that include a brief read-along and guided conversation. Discussion questions and additional resources will be shared ahead of time, a free PDF of the book is available, and hybrid options will help make it easier to join across South Florida. If you fall behind on a chapter, come anyway. Your presence matters more than keeping up with the reading.

We’ll be taking the conversation across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, then wrapping everything up with a closing potluck on November 15.

Come for the book, stay for the conversation, and maybe leave knowing your community, and yourself, a little differently.

Our first gathering is Sunday, October 4 from 3 to 5 PM at Dear Eleanor in Miami-Dade.

If you’ve ever been in a conversation about which word we’re “supposed” to use, you already know the answer can get complicated pretty quickly.

That’s partly because we’re trying to find language for communities that span dozens of countries, cultures, histories, racial identities, languages, and experiences. Of course one word isn’t going to feel right to everyone.

For some people, Latino or Latina feels like home. Others prefer Hispanic, Latine, Latinx, Afro-Latino, or something more specific like Cuban, Colombian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Venezuelan, Dominican, and beyond. Some of us switch between several depending on the conversation, and some would rather skip the umbrella terms altogether.

The interesting part isn’t figuring out which word wins. It’s listening to why people choose the words they do.

So we want to hear from you: What word do you use for yourself, and why?

Maybe we’ll all leave the comments knowing a little more about each other.

Someone tells you, “That’s school policy.”

Okay... which policy?

For LGBTQ+ students, families, and educators in Florida, figuring out what the rules actually say can be frustrating. State law, district policies, school-level decisions, and what someone thinks the rules are can easily get mixed together, especially when those rules affect something as personal as your name, pronouns, bathroom access, classroom experience, or ability to participate in a GSA.

That’s why we created the PRISM School Policy Hub 📚

The Hub brings together information and resources to help you understand the policies affecting LGBTQ+ students, navigate challenges when they happen, and learn how decisions are being made in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. It’s built for students trying to understand their rights, parents trying to support their kids, educators navigating what they can do, and anyone who wants to advocate for safer, more inclusive schools.

Because sometimes one of the most useful questions you can ask is simply: “Can you show me where that’s written?”
