I have two business degrees.
I used to be a CPA.
And I was still terrified to start my private practice.

I thought I needed every answer.
I thought I had to do it “right.”
I thought I wasn’t ready.

But here’s the truth I wish someone told me back then:

💥 It will be overwhelming at first.
💥 You have more hands on your back than you realize.

Therapists are smart — but no one taught us this stuff.
So here’s what I wish every new private practice owner knew about taxes: ⬇️

1. Quarterly estimated taxes are a thing.
Once you're self-employed, the IRS expects you to pay as you earn — not just in April. Missing this will result in a penalty & interest.

2. Missing deductions is like giving the IRS a tip.
I’ve seen folks overpay thousands because they weren’t tracking write-offs or didn’t hire support.

3. Seeing clients in other states?
You may owe taxes or have filing requirements there — even if you're licensed via PSYPACT or Compact. Every state has its own rules, laws and requirements.

This is not to scare you — it’s to empower you.
Because when you understand your numbers, you make better business decisions.

Let’s talk about the difference between describing your work… and connecting with your client. 💬

Your Psychology Today bio isn’t a resume.
It’s your first therapeutic intervention.
And it should stop your ideal client in their scroll and make them say:
“Wait. That’s me.”

👉🏽 General: “I help adults with anxiety, trauma, and relationship issues.”
🔥 Niche gold: “You’ve done talk therapy before. You’re self-aware. But your relationships still don’t feel safe.”

That’s the shift.

It’s not about listing every population you can serve.
It’s about speaking directly to the person you want to serve.

I’ve been getting this question a lot lately.

So let’s talk about it. 💬

In the last recession, therapy demand didn’t decrease — it actually rose.
Stress, uncertainty, transitions… these are the exact moments people seek help.

While people may cut back on non-essentials (like luxury items, gym memberships, or vacations)…

They don’t necessarily cut back on their mental health.

They’re craving emotional relief, stability, support.
And if you’ve been underpaid, overwhelmed, or overworked at your agency job —
this might be your perfect pivot point.

When I started my private practice, I thought I had a leg up with two business degrees…

But truthfully? I had no idea what I was doing.

So here’s a vulnerable share: things I did early on that flopped — and what I do differently now 👇

🙃 THEN: I poured time into my therapy IG, hoping it’d bring clients.
(It brought maybe 3 inquiries total.)

✨ NOW: I follow the 80/20 rule and focus on what actually brings clients:
SEO & optimizing my profiles
Local networking & referrals
Building and maintaining real relationships

🙃 THEN: I tried to market to everyone (even though I knew better).
I was scared to leave people out = lose clients.

✨ NOW: I try to write to one person. And I have had clients tell me it literally feels like I am speaking to them. (Tip: steal your clients’ words from intake forms)

🙃 THEN: I tried to “sell therapy.”
Jargon. Modalities. Acronyms. 🥴

✨ NOW: I speak to transformation. I paint the “after” clearly and emotionally. Still a work in progress, but powerful.

🙃 THEN: I skimmed an SEO book and figured I “got it.”
LOL. I didn’t.

✨ NOW: I’ve taught myself the basics (metadata, alt text, even some code!) and SEO has become my best unpaid employee.

We all start somewhere. We all learn.
Marketing doesn’t have to be perfect. Just intentional.
