Turkish get-ups are one of the best movements I know for building full-body functional strength.

Like most kettlebell work, the key is learning the technique first. Once the movement is clean and controlled, you can gradually increase the load — kettlebell, dumbbell, barbell, or weighted bar. The pattern stays the same. What changes is how much load your body learns to handle through that pattern.

That’s where the magic of the get-up really lies. As you move from the floor to standing and back down again, the shoulders, core, hips, and legs all have to work together to stabilise the weight. Done well, they build strong joints, resilient ligaments, and a deeply connected core.

Learn the technique. Build the strength.

Train for life, not the gym.

🌈 RAINBOW SWINGS 🌈

Intense sessions don’t need to take a long time.

For this one, I warmed up with about 10 minutes of light mobility before moving into 3 sets of Rainbow Swings:

20 swings - light
15 swings - medium
10 swings - heavy
5 swings - your heaviest safe weight
45-second farmer walk with that final weight
45-second rest

Then repeat for 3 sets.

The Rainbow Swings themselves take less than 10 minutes, and the entire workout, including my mobility warm-up, was done in about 20.

But don’t mistake short for easy.

Increasing the weight as the reps come down gives you a great combination of cardiovascular conditioning, power, grip strength and functional strength through the glutes, hamstrings, core and posterior chain. Then the farmer walk finishes each round by asking you to carry a heavy load while already fatigued.

One important note - make sure you’re confident with your kettlebell swing technique before you start increasing the weight. Heavier isn’t better if your technique falls apart. Stay safe, stay in control and use weights that are appropriate for you.

When you don’t have much time, you don’t always need to skip the workout.

Sometimes you just need to make the time you have count.

Train for life, not the gym.

Power and speed are reinforced all the time in training. Plyometrics, explosive lifts, moving faster. But we talk far less about the value of deliberately slowing things down.

Move slowly and suddenly there’s nowhere to hide. The muscles stabilising the hip, knee and ankle have to work continuously to maintain balance, joint position and control throughout the movement.

Then I throw three fast kick-throughs into the middle. The body has to switch from slow, deliberate control to speed and explosiveness, then immediately switch gears again and regain that control. It’s a great way to develop functional strength, balance and stability throughout the standing leg, particularly through the glutes, hamstrings and ankle.

And that kind of control becomes increasingly valuable as we get older. Not just for walking and everyday movement, but for those moments when we stumble, lose our balance or have to react quickly to catch ourselves. I want my body conditioned not just to produce force, but to control it when I need it.

Train for life, not the gym.

Falk works hard.
His job as a wrangler is physically demanding. He’s also a father of two.
He doesn’t have much time to exercise and so he reached out, asking for 3x30min sessions that provide mobility and functional fitness.
He joined the PRML App (link in my bio), and the app built him a guided workout program based on his needs and time available.
What you see is the result.
Not punishing 90min sessions every day. 3x 30mins of bodyweight flow mixed with kettlebells and dumbbells.
If you’re ready to workout smarter not harder, click the link in my bio and start your free trial.

This is a beauty.
Total body session that takes about 15 mins to complete.
Be sure to warm up first and choose KB weight that’s suitable for where you’re at today.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

It took me a long time to realise how much of my relationship with exercise was based on how I thought my body should look, rather than how I wanted it to feel.

These days, I still like looking fit and strong. But what matters far more to me is enjoying what my body can do and how that makes me feel.

I want my movement to add joy to my life, not pressure.

And that’s a metric I’m much happier chasing.

Growing up in the 80s, I was surrounded by a very particular idea of what it meant to look fit, strong and healthy.

Schwarzenegger. Stallone. Van Damme. The bigger, leaner and more muscular you were, the fitter you looked.

And whether I realised it or not, those bodies became the standard I compared mine against.

There’s a phrase I’ve always loved: comparison is the thief of joy.

And I think that’s especially true when we compare our bodies to somebody else’s body, somebody else’s genetics and somebody else’s life.

So, who did you aspire to look like when you were younger?

There’s no better feeling of freedom than when my body is moving the way I want it to.

I’ve had my fair share of injuries and physical setbacks, and whenever my body is struggling through those limitations, it makes me appreciate the freedom of movement I feel on days like today even more.

But that freedom fluctuates.

Some days I feel open, strong, and capable.

Other days I feel tighter, stiffer, and a little more restricted.

The key for me is showing up anyway.

On the days my body feels good, I can ask more of it.

On the days it doesn’t, I do a little less.

But I still move.

I still show up.

And I try to give my body what it needs each day, rather than expecting it to give me the same thing every single day.

Because for me, consistency isn’t about doing the same amount.

It’s about continuing to move, today and for the future.

Train for life, not the gym.
