Every coach I ever played for told me the mental side was the most important part of the game, and not one of them ever trained it with us

So when I read Jim’s words, I recognize the exact gap I sat in as a player, just moved one generation up the dugout. Nobody handed him the background or a curriculum either. But then he did the hardest part, which was raising his hand and asking for help.

🧠 If you’re where Jim was, start with the free training I recorded for coaches called The 3 Secrets to High Performance Coaching. It’s all about you, coach, so grab a pen and paper, because before I tell you the one skill I believe every coach has to master, I’m going to make you write down yours. You’ll also hear what Mark Allen, named by ESPN the greatest endurance athlete of all time, told me changed after he lost in Kona four years in a row.

Coaches told me to be mentally tough. Not one of them told me what that actually meant.

For years I assumed it was some kind of switch, you either had it or you didn't. Turns out it's not a mood, it's a skill set. And skill sets can be built.

One coach told us he needed help with the mental side of coaching and didn’t have the background or the time to build it himself. A few weeks into the training, his team’s practice tone had changed completely.

That shift came from three specific things, the same three things most coaches never get taught.

They’re in the free training: 3 Secrets to High Performance Coaching, link in bio.

I’ve had a Theragun for years, and halfway through this interview I admitted to the founder of the company that I never read the instructions... Come on now!

Jason asked me which matters more, preparation or recovery, and then answered it himself...they’re the SAME. As coaches, we plan every minute of how our athletes get ready. What happens after the final whistle, we leave up to them.

🎙 Grab a pen and paper for this one, because @drjasonwersland lays out exactly what he has athletes do before, during, and after they compete. Tune into Masters of the Game on Youtube (Comment/DM “interview” for the link), then watch what your athletes do the minute your next game ends! by @proathleteadvantage

A track athlete I just started working with told me she was tired all the time, so I sent her off to research how her favorite track athletes recover, and the thing that kept showing up on her list was that they get away from the track COMPLETELY one day a week.

I hear this from athletes and coaches all the time...”I didn’t know I could take the time until I actually took the time.” Your athletes are wired to believe a day off is where they fall behind, and if that day isn’t written on your practice plan, they’ll assume it doesn’t count.

🎙Dr. Jason Wersland, founder of Therabody, breaks this down on our Masters of the Game series (housed on Youtube). Before you listen, pull up this week’s practice plan and find the day your athletes are told to stay away from the field! by @proathleteadvantage

The athlete sitting on your bench forgets one thing...you picked them.

🏈Former Griz All-American and Chicago Bear Levi Horn says every athlete should remember that a coach came and asked them to suit up, which means that coach is already investing in them. “I’m not the best, they might not want me” is a story a lot of kids tell themselves from the bench, and Levi calls it a negative place to start from. The roster spot already proves you believe in them, and the rest is up to what they do with it.

🎙The full Masters of the Game interview with Levi is out now on YouTube! Comment INTERVIEW for the link, then pass it to the athlete who’s been asking why they’re not starting.

Coach, the kid who tunes you out at practice might be telling you something about the relationship.

🏈 Levi Horn grew up without a father, so every coach he played for ended up filling that spot...and he says that bond is what let him take the hard coaching. His advice to athletes is blunt: if somebody’s going to criticize you and coach you up, “you better freaking like them.”

I loved this section of the conversation because it’s exactly the kind of athlete mindset we train inside our Pro Athlete Advantage program.

Coach, somewhere on your roster is a kid who will still be giving you credit long after he’s hung up the cleats.

🏈 Levi Horn never had a father, so every coach he played for ended up filling that role. He says being able to talk honestly with those coaches mattered so much, and he still gives credit to his high school coaches in Spokane, who “pieced it together and shipped that present off to Oregon as best as they could.”

🎙The full Masters of the Game interview with Levi is out TODAY on YouTube (search “Pro Athlete Advantage”)! Watch it, then send it to the athlete on your roster who needs to hear it.

A kid on your team misses the front end of a one and one, shoulders drop, and right then you decide he doesn’t have it. That read treats composure under a miss as something permanent, wired in or out, when the more useful read is that it’s a rep like any other, one he’s taken far fewer times than his jump shot.

Take two hundred jump shots and it looks nothing like the first five. Take two hundred reps of recovering from a miss and the reaction changes the same way—calmer, faster to reset. Reps fix that.

The free training walks through how we build that rep into a normal practice. Link in bio.

Most coaches protect their best player. The best players don’t want that.

💭 What happens when you stop treating your dream like a “maybe” and start treating it like a decision?

You’ll want to hear this story all the way through. It might change the way you think about what’s possible and leave you asking yourself: what would change if you stopped wondering “if” and started figuring out “how”?

Athletes, here's something that might sound backwards: comparing yourself to your other athletes isn't the problem everyone says it is.

It's how you're doing it that's wrecking your confidence.

I learned this one the hard way, and once I flipped it, it changed how I showed up to practice. Watch this video and then tell me:
