What do a Dutch ceramic tile, a WW II submarine, and a classic Miles Davis record have in common?

Each is one small chapter in Hackensack's story, a few examples of the many parade artworks that transformed Main Street last weekend, led by a quartet of mythic Turtle Island puppets. Brainstormed in community story-sessions, built in collaborative workshops at the @bergenmakerspace, and brought to life by dozens of local performers, “A River’s Tale” revealed the depth, complexity, and unique evolution of a storied New Jersey community.

We are so grateful to the many local participants who brought their personal reflections, hard work, and processional spirit to this celebration. Special thanks to the the @centerformoderndanceeducation whose globe-trotting ensembles brought the beat and the fire to the parade. And special thanks to puppet wranglers @tedmalin and @sharkieshane, who marshalled and inspired a rising tide of parade marchers. And finally, thanks to @nnjcf_artsbergen whose fundraising and organizational vision made this project possible. taken in Hackensack, New Jersey by @processional_arts

Clean water is a basic human right.

From 1990 to 2017, thousands of gallons of toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” were spilled into Newburgh’s watershed from nearby Stewart Air National Guard Base. Although the city was able to switch to the Catskill Aqueduct water as emergency measure, the watershed remains polluted after 30+ years, the costs are burdensome, and public trust in the municipal water supply has been eroded.

The WaterWorks Parade is a community-built effort to celebrate clean water, while giving visual expression to an invisible nemesis too often obscured by civic authorities and outdated policies.

PAW worked with local residents in tandem with the @newburghcleanwaterproject and teens from the @newburghparksconservancy to create a chimera merging the PFAS molecular structure with a C-17 military aircraft; a transformational Water Main, and a host of hopeful native fish, flowers, and other manifestations of a clean water future. taken in Newburgh, New York by @processional_arts

💧 WATER WORKS! Clean water is a right.

Today, GrantForesight joined the Newburgh community to bring attention to something that impacts us all …the water we drink.

PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” can persist for years and contaminate our water. Awareness matters. Education matters. And advocacy matters.

A special thank you to Riverkeeper, Processional Arts, the Newburgh Clean Water Project, and community partners for creating an opportunity for Newburgh residents to learn, participate and advocate for clean water. 💧🐟🌎

Because protecting our water means protecting our people, our wildlife and our future.

Apparently, it’s National Coworking Day. Theater has always been a coworking space. Long before open-plan offices, artists gathered to collaborate, share ideas, challenge one another, and to make things.

HIGHLAND LIGHTS is the epitome of co-working. Bringing together professional theater artists with members of the community to co-create something truly special. Here's a look back at this year's fifth annual HIGHLAND LIGHTS: ASSEMBLY.

✨ Co-created with Processional Arts Workshop (@processional_arts) and featuring an original choral score by award-winning composer Heather Christian (@hcarbornauts), this year's procession reflected on 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence while honoring revolutionary voices from both the distant and recent past.

🌠 What began with months of lantern-making workshops culminated in a luminous July 4th procession at the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center, where participants and audience members carried light together as the HIGHLAND LIGHTS: ASSEMBLY choir accompanied the procession, transforming remembrance into a shared act of celebration.

🎶 Thank you to everyone who built lanterns, raised their voices, carried the light and made this year's HIGHLAND LIGHTS: ASSEMBLY possible—even in the midst of a very dramatic lightening storm. Here's to five years of creativity, connection, and community.
