Every year since 1998, the visionary puppet designers at Processional Arts Workshop have led the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade with large-scale puppet performances embodying the parade's theme. The performances tell complex and evocative narratives that unfold as three-minute operas along the parade route. And every October, @processional_arts' Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles invite dozens of volunteers to participate in crafting these amazing performances, during weekend puppet-raisings at the workshop’s historic barn in upstate New York. We’ve had the pleasure of documenting this glorious, community-based artistic work for our film. And we can’t wait to see what they create for this year's parade! Help us finish our film and get it out to the world! Out of Body This year, the Village Halloween Parade celebrates “Body and Soul” The separation of matter and spirit, of life and death, becomes less clear on Hallow’s Eve, when the Skeletons – the OG “All Souls” – reunite with their bodies to dance one more time. How easily we forget that this deep entanglement of body and soul, so palpable on Halloween Night, is really true all the time. Even as the skeletons journey inward to their bodies, we journey outward every night, sleepwalking into the netherworld – where dreams await. We dream in our bodies (often of our bodies), even as our souls traverse terrains of memory and imagination. When we fly in our dreams, we can feel our buoyancy with arms outstretched. When we walk through imagined landscapes, our feet feel the ground shift beneath us. We feel the passage of minutes or hours, even as no time elapses. Sleep endows us with the power to experience – again and again – a momentary uplift from our physical constraints, to remake the world on our own terms. Like the classic depiction of the Soul hovering over the Death-bed, we are out of body, yet fully embodied – a liminal space between life and death, where we remember, fleetingly, that anything is possible. So this year, we invite the Parade to walk with us through a waking dream. A dozen luminous sleeping figures, clad in their pajamas and nightgowns, discover a domestic space intimately familiar yet unsettlingly strange. A tilting house of open windows, in which everyday objects come to life with uncanny grace, books and clocks take flight, and eyes, ears, and teeth swirl about in a sea of sensory mischief, replaying and banishing the worries of the day, to greet the morning and make the world anew. 15TH ANNUAL MORNINGSIDE LIGHTS : A COMMON THREAD. This year’s theme was an exploration of the visual patterns and motifs that surround us, in textiles, domestic adornments, architecture, and engineered spaces. Workshop participants created and combined luminous patterned panels into lanterns inspired by the geometry of American quilts. A winding red line formed a visual line that linked each design throughout the final procession—a common thread that connects the human fabric across our rich and varied differences. Concept and direction by PROCESSIONAL ARTS WORKSHOP Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles, artistic directors Morningside Lights is produced by the Arts Initiative and Miller Theatre at Columbia University. @nycmorningside @columbia #morningsidelights @arts_initiative @millertheatreatcu @processional_arts @alex_kahn #sophiamichahelles @dogsofnyc @dogsoftheuws @dogsofinstagram #instadaily #chihuahua @chihuahua_club_house @chihuahuas.hub #love

💧 WATER WORKS! Clean water is a right. Today, GrantForesight joined the Newburgh community to bring attention to something that impacts us all …the water we drink. PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” can persist for years and contaminate our water. Awareness matters. Education matters. And advocacy matters. A special thank you to Riverkeeper, Processional Arts, the Newburgh Clean Water Project, and community partners for creating an opportunity for Newburgh residents to learn, participate and advocate for clean water. 💧🐟🌎 Because protecting our water means protecting our people, our wildlife and our future. The Newburgh Waterworks Parade is one of my favorite events of the year — partly because of the incredible puppets and art installations that are carried through the streets of Newburgh, but more importantly because it is organized by the Newburgh Clean Water Coalition. This coalition was formed in the aftermath of the 2016 state of emergency regarding PFOA and PFOS contamination in the city’s primary watershed, and is a powerful example of how communities organize to advocate for themselves. Many thanks to them for continuing to spread awareness of the contamination and to demand clean drinking water. Thank you to @newburghcleanwaterproject and @processional_arts for organizing another beautiful event! And thank you to all of the community members who joined in. #cleanwater #environmentaljustice #Lisa4NY #sd39

Kelly and I had a splendid day of cardboard building the other day. We lent our hands to the community building process for Hackensack’s Giant puppet parade. We got to help assemble turtle shells and paper mache turtle legs. 🐢 Building designs and direction were led by the amazing team @processional_arts. The Giant Puppet Parade in Hackensack takes place on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM as part of the Illumination 250 festival celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Parade Route & ScheduleTime: 2:00 PM – 4:00. There are many more events happening this same day, in conjunction with this event. Check it out if you live in the area. More information is available on the Downtown Hackensack site. #hackensacknj #giantpuppets #communityarts
