🎗️ Introducing CLEAR-East — a new regional consortium tackling cancer inequalities across the East of England.

Today marked our inaugural launch workshop, bringing together clinicians, researchers, public health leaders, voluntary and community organisations, and — most importantly — people with lived experience of cancer inequalities, all in one room, as equal partners.

Proud of what our team, including Dr Claire Goodchild, has built to bring this consortium to life.

Together we're working to close the gaps in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes that too often depend on where you live, your ethnicity, disability, or socioeconomic status.

🔬 Evidence-led. 🤝 Community-centred. 📍 East of England-wide.

This is just the beginning — watch this space as CLEAR-East builds toward a fairer future for cancer care across our region. by @prof_lee_smith

In this study we conclude that although physical activity is not officially recommended, given the almost universal benefits of physical activity, combined with their potential benefits for men's sexual health, we highly recommend physical activity as a therapeutic intervention for the prevention and management of male sexual dysfunction, and specifically erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and low libido. by @prof_lee_smith

Our important research published in the BMJ found that opioid use during pregnancy was not associated with a substantial increase in the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders in the offspring. A slightly increased risk of neuropsychiatric disorders was observed, but this should not be considered clinically meaningful given the observational nature of the study, and limited to high opioid dose, more than one opioid used, longer duration of exposure, opioid exposure during early pregnancy, and only to some neuropsychiatric disorders. by @prof_lee_smith

Despite the popularity and potential nutritional benefits of bamboo consumption in aiding the prevention and management of several health conditions, to date, no attempt has been made to collate and critically appraise all literature on bamboo and human health. We aimed to address this gap in the literature through a systematic review. We systematically searched Medline/PubMed and Web of Science electronic databases until 26th October 2024. All retrospective or prospective studies reporting the effects of human consumption of bamboo shoots or other bamboo products on health were included. In vitro findings related to the effect of bamboo extracts on human cells or in processing food were also included. In vivo studies demonstrated a protective effect against internal exposure to acrylamide and glycidamide, an improvement in glycemic control, improvement in lipid profile, improvement in bowel function, an increase in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, a lower cell toxicity and increased cell viability but also an association with a high prevalence of goiters. In vitro studies demonstrated antioxidant activity, probiotic effects, inhibition of furan formation, high nutritional value and reduction of acrylamide formation during food processing. The findings from our systematic review, which included 16 studies, suggest that if appropriately prepared, the consumption of bamboo may have multiple health benefits for humans. However, more high-quality experimental trials are required to further elucidate on the health benefits before concrete recommendations can be drawn. We thus call on the academic community to further investigate this crop for its high potential for improving human health. by @prof_lee_smith

Biostimulants, including calcium hydroxyapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and polycaprolactone, have become popular in aesthetic medicine as they lead to long-term tissue rejuvenation. However, their efficacy (eg, dermal, volume, and anatomic outcomes), patient satisfaction, and safety remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis collates and appraises the available data on biostimulants, examining their efficacy, adverse events, and patient satisfaction. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed/Medline (National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD), Scopus (Elsevier, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), Embase (Elsevier), and Web of Science (Clarivate, Philadelpha, PA), up to January 14, 2025. Studies were included that assessed the effects of biostimulants on efficacy, adverse events, and patient satisfaction in observational studies. Meta-analyses using random-effects models were performed on individual proportions and applied to 7 outcomes (satisfaction, bruising, ecchymosis, edema, erythema, nodule development, pain). A total of 197 articles were screened, and 25 studies were included in the systematic review. The results of meta-analyses indicate that the pooled satisfaction rate of biostimulants was estimated to be 91% (95% CI, 67%-98%; I2 = 87.3%), with the following adverse event rates: bruising, 27% (95% CI, 12%-50%; I2 = 96%); ecchymosis, 22% (95% CI, 11%-40%; I2 = 95.5%); edema, 5% (95% CI, 1%-18%; I2 = 93.6%); erythema, 16% (95% CI, 4%-47%; I2 = 94.3%); nodule development, 5% (95% CI, 2%-10%; I2 = 85.5%); pain, 92% (95% CI, 63%-99%; I2 = 87.7%). Among studies not included in the meta-analysis, all parameters studied showed significant improvements in terms of dermal, volume, anatomic, and satisfaction outcomes. Biostimulants demonstrate clinical promise and a favorable tolerability profile in aesthetic medicine despite the common occurrence of minor adverse events, most notably pain. by @prof_lee_smith

Our new text book "Routledge Handbook of Sedentary Behaviour" is on pre-order now on Amazon, Routledge and other distributors!

Routledge Handbook of Sedentary Behaviour assesses the field and provides an in-depth update on sedentary behaviour research. Sedentary behaviour is defined as any waking behaviour where the energy expenditure is low and the predominant posture is sitting, reclining, or lying. Evidence is rapidly accumulating that sedentary behaviour is associated with poor health outcomes. Over the past 20 years, time spent sitting has increased dramatically as people spend more time sitting for work, commuting, and leisure. Excessive sedentary behaviour has been associated with an increased risk of numerous noncommunicable diseases. The field of sedentary behaviour research is rapidly developing.

This book provides a source of information on the epidemiological trends in sedentary behaviour across the life course. Innovations in quantifying sedentary behaviour have led to a number of developments in tools used to measure sedentary behaviour, and this book reviews their relative merits. Our understanding of the range of physical and mental health effects continues to expand, and these are discussed, including likely causal mechanisms. Following this, the effectiveness of various interventions within different populations is presented. Finally, the text summarises these advances in knowledge and gives direction to new areas for future research.

The text offers students, researchers, and academics an up-to-date summary of the sedentary behaviour evidence base and serves as a catalyst for future research through summaries of future research areas that remain addressed. by @prof_lee_smith

Our important new study, published in the aesthetic surgery journal, titled "The Association Between Existing Health Conditions and Adverse Events from Botulinum Toxins: Findings From a UK Cross-sectional Survey in 2024" is online!
Background
There is growing demand for Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections in the UK. However, there is a scarcity of research in relation to associations between medical conditions and BoNT adverse events.
Objectives
To investigate cross-sectional associations between existing medical conditions and the likelihood of adverse events in a large sample of UK BoNT users.
Methods
A cross-sectional observational survey on individuals’ (≥18 years) experiences and adverse events with cosmetic BoNT injections. Data were collected on participants age, gender, existing health conditions, acute and long-term adverse events following BoNT treatment. To investigate the association between pre-existing physical conditions and the occurrence of post-BoNT adverse effects, multivariable logistic regression models were performed.
Results
919 participants who received BoNT were included in the analysis. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that several pre-existing physical and psychiatric conditions were significantly associated with increased odds of specific post-BoNT adverse effects. Notably, individuals with skin disease (odds ratio [OR] 22.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.64–132.03, p=0.001), type 1 diabetes mellitus (OR 110.34, 95% CI 3.85–3381.06, p=0.002), chronic migraine (OR 7.69, 95% CI 1.84–27.61, p=0.003), and thyroid disorders (OR 6.18, 95% CI 1.27–23.44, p=0.012) demonstrated significantly higher odds of developing nausea following BoNT administration. Multiple other significant associations were found between numerous existing health conditions and numerous adverse events.
Conclusions
This study found that autoimmune, endocrine, neurological, and mental health comorbidities significantly increase the likelihood of adverse outcomes, ranging from bruising and ptosis to mood disturbance, neuromuscular weakness, and apparent treatment failure.

A new UK-wide Botox survey dropped and the results should make you pause.
@prof_lee_smith  well done Prof. Lee!!

919 people shared their real experiences.
Most were repeat users, with high satisfaction.
But the survey uncovered serious safety gaps:

1 in 4 reported acute side effects
Some indicated long-term issues that are NOT minor!

⚠️ Shockingly, nearly 1 in 10 weren’t given a consent form, and almost 1 in 5 weren’t told how to handle complications.

Despite many saying they were okay with results, 89% demanded stricter regulation.

🗣️Patients clearly know something isn’t right.

This is your reminder: satisfaction rates don’t erase the risks, or the need for stronger protections.

Because in the end, PEOPLE help the People. When the system fails, it’s on US to demand better.
