Over one month vacation, did three photography workshops in three countries. First trip was “American eagles photographing workshop” in Homer, Alaska. I spent seven enjoyable days. This was not the first workshop, but rather the third over the past six years, with "Alan Murphy" #alanmurphyphotography. The workshop was not limited to pictures of eagles, but also extended to other birds, owls and picturesque nature, and lucky enough, saw and photographed amazing northern lights. A resident of the city of Homer mentions that he had never seen the strength of the northern light, compared to what happened that night, for last 40 years.
In the coming days, I will show daily some of the pictures of this workshop.

Home

Home is not on top of the world, but to me, it is my whole world. It may not be all green, but it is peaceful, authentic, and full of a quiet beauty that feels like nowhere else. Home is not about perfection—it is about belonging. And this is what I call home.

Freezing the Wings
The rapid wingbeats of a hovering hummingbird are so incredibly fast that even a high shutter speed alone cannot truly freeze every detail of their movement. To capture the wings sharply, photographers often use an extremely short flash duration, typically at 1/16 or even 1/32 power.
However, a single flash is usually not enough to illuminate the hummingbird evenly while also lighting the surrounding environment. Therefore, multiple flashes are strategically positioned around the bird, working together to provide balanced illumination and beautifully freeze the hummingbird in mid-air.

Hummingbird Multi-Flash Setup for freezing the hummingbird’s wings
Recommended starting settings:
* Camera: Manual exposure
* Lens: 600–800 mm
* Aperture: f/11–f/16
* Shutter: 1/200–1/250 sec (or camera’s flash sync speed)
* ISO: 100–200
* Focus: Manual focus on the feeding/perching point
* Flash: Manual, approximately 1/16–1/32 power
* Number of flashes: 3–5 off-camera flashes
Flash arrangement:
1. Main flash: 45° in front/side of the hummingbird.
2. Second flash: Opposite side for fill.
3. Third flash: Behind/side to create a rim light and separate the wings.
4. Optional fourth/fifth flashes: Higher or behind the bird to illuminate the wings/background.
5. Use large diffusers to soften the light and avoid harsh highlights Hummingbird photography birds Ecuador taken in Ecuador by @profalwan

Hovering Perfection
The hummingbird hovers effortlessly in mid-air, yet its wings remain a translucent blur despite the rapid shutter speed. The faint wing shadows reveal the extraordinary speed، may reach 80/sec, of their motion, capturing the remarkable power and precision that allow one of nature’s smallest birds to seemingly defy gravity.

Star Trail:
A star trail is an astrophotography technique that records the apparent movement of stars across the sky caused by Earth’s rotation, creating circular or curved light trails.
Main Subtypes:
* Circular Star Trails: Concentric circles around the celestial pole (North or South).
* Partial Circular Trails: Arc-shaped trails captured over a shorter exposure.
* Linear Star Trails: Nearly straight trails seen when photographing toward the eastern or western horizon.
* This photo was created by combining 180 short exposures using software such as StarStaX, reducing noise and allowing flexible processing.

Mahajah Beneath the Milky Way
Standing in timeless silence west of Hail, North of Saudi Arabia, the majestic mountain of Mahajah rises from the Arabian desert as a monument sculpted by millions of years of geological history. Its rugged cliffs and weathered granite have witnessed countless generations, preserving the story of a land where nature, history, and culture converge.
Above this ancient sentinel stretches the breathtaking arch of the Milky Way—our home galaxy, a luminous river of light woven from hundreds of billions of stars. Every point of light visible is a distant sun, while the soft glowing band reveals the combined brilliance of stars too numerous to distinguish individually. Beyond what we see lies an even greater reality: a galaxy spanning about 100,000 light-years and containing vast clouds of gas, dark nebulae, and worlds yet to be discovered.

(Note: photo1 is a night shot; photo2 is the camera set up for a night shot; photo3 is a pre-sunset photo of the mountain from inside.

The photo captures a moment of sublime transcendence, where the viewer stands above a vast, illuminated sea of clouds just after sunset, absorbing the residual warmth of joy and happiness beneath an immense, star-pricked sky that instills profound awe. The scene is a silent, breathtaking collision of earthly triumph and cosmic scale, feeling both intimate and infinite.
