The Shadow of the Cliffs 🌊🖤

The European shag (Gulosus aristotelis) rules the rugged cliffs of Hornøya Island, Vardø, Norway’s easternmost seabird colony. Sleek and mysterious, this master diver hunts beneath the icy waters, using its streamlined body to chase fish with precision.

With its emerald-green eyes and glossy black plumage, the shag stands out among Arctic seabirds. The survival of this coastal hunter depends on the delicate balance of marine life.

Photography in tough conditions like snow and strong winds is challenging. The cold numbs fingers, drains batteries, and harsh weather obscures visibility, making it hard to capture the perfect shot. Snow and moisture can also damage equipment. Despite these obstacles, dedicated photographers persevere, using protective gear and creative techniques to capture the raw beauty of nature. Their images, showcasing nature’s power and majesty, are a testament to their determination.
