Who knew LEGO could trigger childhood memories… not mine, my kids’!

Did some LEGO-based team building and everyone was talking creativity, collaborating and problem-solving together.

Meanwhile, my inner mom was having flashbacks to stepping on those tiny plastic weapons barefoot at 2 AM!

Team building for some. PTSD (Post Traumatic Stepping Disorder) for me!

Some people travel for sights.. I apparently travel for the menu 🍴🍝

A little collection of plates from around the world. Because culture is not only found in museums or monuments... sometimes it arrives on a plate... and requires a second helping 🥘

Passport stamped. Plate cleared. Research complete! 🥂

POV: They said “dress for the occasion.”
I heard “BE the occasion.” 😂🎓💃🏽

A little scholarship.
A little sass.
A whole lot of joy. ❤️

Because academia is serious business…
I, however, do not have to be serious in every photo. 😂

POV: The conference started before the conference 🍽️

Still reeling from the energy, excitement and absolute fun of the MANCOSA Quality Conference… so naturally, we’re taking it back to where it all began. 🎬

21 July: Pre-conference VIP dinner at @mancosa.africa Durban Head Office. 🏢

Big conversations. Plenty of laughs. And just a little indication that we were in for something special. ✨

An absolute privilege to host Dr Naledi Pandor, Shaida Essack and Rose Masha as we kicked off what would become a truly memorable few days!

Who said conversations about quality and higher education have to be boring? ! 📚 🔥

The dinner set the table…
The conference brought the heat.
And apparently, I’m still not over it. 😂❤️

Day 1. Programme Director mode was definitely ON.

The MANCOSA Quality Conference reminded me just how much conferences have changed.

We had moved beyond the goodie bag and the name badge. This was about deep engagement!

People stayed in the conversation. Asked difficult questions. Challenged ideas. Shared practice. And, importantly, thought about what quality needed to look like when we returned to our institutions and our work.

Because a great conference should never simply give you something to carry home in a branded bag.

It should give you something to carry back into your work!

Not everyone gets to stand beside mythological creatures in a city built on history and power.

But then again, I was never meant for ordinary places.

The griffins of St Petersburg were believed to guard gold, strength, and hidden treasures.
I think women like us do the same.

We protect our dreams fiercely.
We carry generations of sacrifice quietly.
And we learn, over time, that our greatest power was never in being rescued… but in becoming unforgettable.

A little mythical.
A little dangerous.
A lot unbreakable!

Education has never been my profession. It’s my purpose.

Some of the most meaningful work we do as educators doesn’t happen in lecture theatres.

It happens in classrooms where young people begin to see possibilities they may never have imagined for themselves.

As part of SEWA International South Africa’s Mandela Day youth initiative, I had the privilege of spending the day with the Grade 11 and 12 learners of Bonela Secondary School.

We spoke about university, STEM, artisan pathways, resilience, and the courage it takes to pursue opportunities that often feel beyond reach.

One moment has stayed with me.

As we celebrated the learners who had already secured provisional acceptance into university engineering programmes, I looked around the room and saw so many young women raising their hands.

That wasn’t just a celebration of university offers.

It was a celebration of barriers being broken.

For too long, STEM has been viewed through the lens of who belongs. Seeing those young women reminded me that the narrative is changing, one learner, one classroom and one opportunity at a time.

Experiences like these reaffirm why education remains central to everything I do. Not simply because it opens doors, but because it expands what young people believe is possible for themselves.

Thank you to SEWA International South Africa for creating opportunities that extend far beyond Mandela Day. Through initiatives such as Sponsor a Child, Soles 4 Souls and other community programmes, they continue to invest in young people throughout the year.

Perhaps the greatest investment we can make in our future is helping young people recognise their own potential before the world does.

Everything else begins there. 🤍
