Sacramento, CA — Today, I had the honor of representing @commissionapia alongside Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes (D–Colton) and Assemblymember Mike Fong (D–Alhambra). students, fellow commissioners @drdkit @paguiojason @rillest and higher education leaders including our advisory members for a press conference highlighting legislation to establish Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANHPI) designations in California.

Under current federal law, HSIs are colleges and universities where at least 25% of undergraduate students are Hispanic or Latino. Asian American and Native American Pacific Islanders (AANAPISIs) are colleges and universities where at least 10% of undergraduate students are Asian American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and where a significant share of students come from low-income backgrounds. These campuses often provide targeted academic programs, student support services, and pathways to careers in high-demand fields. However, California does not yet have a formal state designation recognizing these institutions or encouraging campuses to strengthen these efforts. taken in Sacramento Capitol Building by @professorkirinmac

Today was commencement at USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work but I’m sick and had other things that prevented me from going. We already celebrated last year when I finished. I did muster up energy to commemorate with a little photo shoot. I picked each spot intentionally, and there’s a story with the images, amongst the many more stories and lessons I’ve yet to share. I didn’t want to just take photos at the university, I wanted them in the places I learned most. Song by @andradaymusic , who’s also from Paradise Hills. by @professorkirinmac

Thank you to our @1stgenscholars for joining us to talk mental health. My gratitude to my community sons Aaron and Arneson for being my riders today in this work. To have brown men talk about staying emotionally well is critical. We hope to see you again, scholars. “Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future.”

We are winning this week, folks. Anthony Williams was my student in 2017 at San Diego City College. He would sit in my class, quietly, thoughtfully, observant, and never missed an assignment. I would not have guessed he fired gunshots at law enforcement 25 years ago, thinking doing so would protect his chosen brothers, gang members who jumped him in when he was barely a teen, turning him into Ant Dogg—his street alias. When the BPH Board of Parole Hearings asked Anthony why he did it he said—
“I finally gave them an answer that came from the deepest and most painful part of me.
I said, “I would have shot at God.”
That line tells part of Anthony’s story. A story he only shared with me as we sat in a cafe nine years later, when he asked me to write introductory words for this book. I could not be more proud of him and the man he is today, but he fought to get here. His story is incredible. Please get your copy, link in my bio and follow him at @williamscatalystinc . Your purchase helps support his re-entry work, making sure others know they have different paths to walk, like he did. taken in San Diego City College by @professorkirinmac

A milestone for AANHPI student success in California! 🎓

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 2374, authored by Assemblymember Mike Fong and sponsored by CAPIAA, establishing California’s first statewide Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander–Serving Institution designation.

“I am proud that AB 2374 has been signed by Governor Newsom to recognize and support AANHPI students across California,” said Assemblymember Fong.

The new designation will recognize colleges that set measurable goals and strengthen academic and basic needs support to help AANHPI students stay enrolled, graduate, transfer, and pursue opportunities beyond college.

The signing also reflects a partnership between lawmakers and the communities they serve. As CAPIAA Vice Chair Dr. Kirin A. Macapugay shared, “Assemblymember Fong listened to our communities, brought people together, and never lost sight of the students and working families this law is meant to serve.”

CAPIAA thanks Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Fong, the students, educators, and community partners who helped bring this legislation to the finish line.😃

I am in tears. Since all the federal cuts to critical programs for our students, our CA Commission on APIA Affairs @commissionapia team (I’m Vice - Chair), our Higher Education Advisory (so many we need to properly name), and many others like Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education - APAHE @apahenational have been working hard to ensure our students are still supported.

The advocacy to get this bill passed was another example of why we must organize in solidarity. I am proud of our state. I am proud of us for not backing down. Thank you to @asmmikefong , Sophia Kwong Kim, and his team for leading. Thank you to Dr. BJ Snowden and the Black Serving Institutions office for their guidance and support. Thank you to Senator Reyes and our compas at @hacunews as we await news on SB 1255 and the passing of a Hispanic Serving Designation as well. Thank you to @cagovernor ! It takes all of us. 🙏🏾 #forourstudents by @professorkirinmac
