Blessings aren’t always obvious.

Sometimes the blessing is what you received.
Sometimes it’s what you survived.
Sometimes it’s what didn’t happen.

Be grateful for all three.

Not every blessing looks like a blessing at first.

MENISCUS RECOVERY ISOMETRICS

Recovery isn’t something I separate from training. It’s part of the training.

After dealing with a meniscus injury, I’ve been intentional about adding isometric work into my routine — not just to get back on the court, but to build my body back up so I can trust it again.

Isometrics can be useful for developing strength and control without requiring a lot of movement through the joint. They can help you work on muscle activation, stability, strength endurance and your ability to produce force while keeping the movement controlled.

For basketball players, that matters.

Basketball constantly asks your body to:
• Absorb force
• Stop and start
• Change direction
• Decelerate
• Jump and land
• Hold strong positions
• Create force from different angles

Your knees have to handle all of it.

That’s why I’m adding these exercises into my routine instead of only focusing on shooting, lifting or conditioning.

The goal isn’t just to get back to basketball.

The goal is to build a body that can handle basketball.

Recovery. Strength. Stability. Control.

The small things you consistently add to your routine can make a big difference over time.

Don’t just train what people see. Train what allows you to perform. taken in Gallus by @progressyourgame

Season is starting. You should already know the spots where you’re going to score.

Don’t go into games guessing.

You know the plays. You know the actions. You know the spots you’ll get to. And most of the time, you have an idea of how the defense is going to guard you.

So when you work on your game, be intentional.

Don’t just get shots up for the sake of getting shots up. Work on the shots, movements, and situations that are actually going to show up in your games.

Get to your spots.
Have a counter when they take it away.
Have a counter to your counter.

It’s all situational, but you can prepare for the “what if?”

The more you rep those situations, the more confident you become.

Eventually, you stop thinking about it.

The read happens.
Your body reacts.
The movement becomes natural.

Don’t practice randomly. Practice for the game you’re actually going to play.

Not everyone will understand the work.
Not everyone will support the journey.
And not every setback means stop.

Stay solid. Stay focused. Keep your head up.

The noise doesn’t change the mission. The work continues. 🏀

Maybe the goal isn’t to get there faster.

Maybe it’s to slow down enough to actually experience the journey.

Appreciate where you are.
Learn from what you’ve been through.
Stay open to what’s ahead.

You don’t have to have everything figured out.

Just keep moving — at your own pace

🚨🚨 KEEP THE GAME SIMPLE 🚨🚨

When skill training, get your body ready for the movements it’s actually going to make.

I’m not here to overcomplicate a simple game.

The goal is simple: score the ball as efficiently as possible.

Understand the small amount of space you have.
Understand where the defense normally sits.
Understand the options you can get to from there.

Train with purpose.
Read the game.
Make the right decision.

Don’t overthink it.

It’s just work.

There’s something hilarious about the random thoughts that hit you while training. 😂

I remember watching coaches teach a drill and explain everything perfectly… but then they wouldn’t actually shoot the ball.

Immediately my brain would go:

“Yeah, that was definitely about to clank straight off the backboard.” 😭

I’ve actually started getting into the habit of remembering these random thoughts and writing them down. Looking back at them later is hilarious because your mind really creates an entire story in two seconds.

But now there’s another side to it…

I’m the coach. 🤣

So whenever I’m demonstrating something, there’s this unnecessary pressure in my head that I HAVE to make the shot.

Because somewhere in that gym there might be a kid thinking the exact same thing I used to think. 😂

And every time I knock it down, especially considering I’m not getting daily reps up anymore, I walk away thinking:

“Oh yeah… we still got it.” 😭🤣

It’s funny how your perspective changes when you go from being the player watching the coach… to becoming the coach everybody is watching.

What are some of the wild/random thoughts that have popped into your head while training? 🤣 I know I’m not the only one. taken in Frankfurt, Germany by @progressyourgame

I use this with players at every level — from young athletes learning the game to professional players sharpening their skills.

One of my favorite setups is having the player sit in a chair, then explode out of it directly into a layup. From there, we can progress into a between-the-legs move into the layup.

It looks simple, but there’s a purpose behind it.

Coordination. Balance. Confidence. Repetition. Body control.

The player has to connect their hands, feet, hips, and eyes while coming out of an unusual position and immediately getting into an attack.

I also emphasize keeping the shoulders pointed toward the floor as they explode out. That teaches the player to stay low, control their body, and attack the basket with purpose.

But the bigger lesson is getting players to think outside of the normal.

Basketball doesn’t always give you perfect positioning. You won’t always catch the ball comfortably. You won’t always have your feet set. You won’t always get to attack from the exact situation you practiced.

So why only train in perfect situations?

Create different starting points. Change the rhythm. Change the angle. Make the player adapt.

Don’t just train the move. Train the mind, the body, and the ability to create when the game gets unpredictable.

INTENTIONAL WORK TRANSLATES.

Don’t walk into the gym just to say you worked. Walk in with a purpose.

Work on your craft with intention. Think about the sets you’ll actually run in games. Think about the situations you’ll face, the reads you’ll have to make, and how you can create an advantage when the defense takes something away.

Skill training isn’t just about getting more reps. It’s about making your reps mean something.

The goal is to make your individual work show up when your team needs you most.

Train with purpose. Think the game. Build your skill around the player you’re becoming.
