Echo I’s day out at Robot-Con Amsterdam

Yesterday, we brought our first upper-body prototype out of the workshop to share what we’re building at Project Echo. It was so much fun seeing everyone’s interest in the project!

We’re already working on Echo II, focused on inserting a key and opening a door as we develop an open-source humanoid for search and rescue.

Thank you to Grant Easterbrook and AI on the Amstel for organising the event.

And a big thank you to the Project Echo team for the work behind this prototype!

Q1 PROJECT EVENING 🤖🦾

Last Thursday, we hosted the first RSA Project Evening of the academic year at RoboHouse! Many RSA Teams and Projects were presented, alongside open positions. Participants also got a comprehensive overview of how to start their own hobby project within RSA. It was a productive evening! 🤩🙌

📝 Applications are open for:
- Project ECHO @project_echo_delft
- Delft Mercurians (RoboCup Team) @delftmercurians
- Project CORA @cora__rbt
- HotMouse (MicroMouse Competition Team)

No longer accepting applications but still cool projects:
- Delft Dryad

❓ Check out our website rsadelft.nl for more information, and feel free to reach out via email if you still have any questions.
💡Want to start your own project? Contact us!
🙌 Thanks to everyone who joined us, and we hope to see your around in one of RSA‘s projects!

👉 Did you miss the evening? You can rewatch it at https://www.youtube.com/@rsa_delft! taken in RoboHouse by @project_echo_delft

Humanoids are getting more attention. But beyond the demos, where can they actually prove useful?

That question drives our open-source humanoid project. We’re exploring search and rescue in damaged buildings as a potential use case, asking where a humanoid’s form could offer a practical advantage for rescue teams.

In this short clip from our RSA Project Evening Q1 pitch, we explain why we’re investigating this application and where we think there’s potential.

Where do you see humanoids proving their value first?

“Nobody cares about your humanoid project.”

RSA did. And that gave us even more reason to keep building.

At Project Echo, we’re building an open-source humanoid to explore one question: what is he added value that humanoid robots could bring to search and rescue operations in damaged and partially collapsed buildings?

Our goal is to test its value in the RoboCup Rescue Competition There’s a lot of work between our current prototype and that goal. We’re sharing that part too.

Behind every short clip is a team working through problems that don’t fit into a reel. Sometimes the progress is a working mechanism. Sometimes it’s finally understanding why it failed.

A huge thank you to RSA for supporting Project Echo while we’re still building towards that vision. Having people believe in the project at this stage means a lot.

For now, you get a meme. Follow along to see the robot we build behind it.

At Future Pulse 2026, we pitched our project’s new direction for the first time: exploring the added value of humanoid robots for search and rescue in damaged and partially collapsed buildings.

Humanoid robots are often dismissed as overhyped technology with limited practical value. We’re investigating where they could make a difference. Our core hypothesis: a human-like body could offer an advantage in environments designed around people, from navigating stairs and narrow passages to climbing over obstacles or manipulating objects.

We proudly present ECHO I, our first prototype. It consists of two 5-DoF robotic arms mounted on a stable frame, each equipped with a custom-designed, lightweight three-finger hand.

Our objective is to autonomously catch and throw a ball. For this purpose, we designed two dedicated claws that allow the robot to catch and hold the ball in a stable and controlled manner. taken in Science Centre Delft by @project_echo_delft
