volume twelve: despite it all, it’s still us 💫💐🪽

i had this issue brewing with images of birds, and i do wish i got more visuals of that in here. but i started to associate birds with freedom, and i began to feel very connected with the natural world around me. the wind swirled around me, leaves and flower petals swished above my head and raced ahead of me on my way to work, and my heart began to burst with light. you know that moment when you know that your place in the world is getting more comfortable, when your body feels like home? i felt like that in such a powerful way this month. i hope to experience this more in june and this whole summer.

this was supposed to drop last day of may, but this issue is very featured on being queer and being in resistance to the powers that be, so maybe opening pride month with this is the best thing possible! i’m so happy that every voice here is not just queer but intersectionally so. we all live such complex lives and they deserve to be highlighted, especially those of us who tow many lines. we walk many a tightrope, but it’s high risk, high reward. and i’d take this gamble again and again. i would choose to be black, latine, and queer in every lifetime.

featuring musings by @elias.nealy, @iyoaghedo, @jedidiahmariee, @elonnotmuskkk, @imsinclair.audio, @j_spiegsss & @demon7face !

i hope you enjoy your time in the garden, dear angels ♡

volume eleven: (can we be friends?) 🌷🪽🩵

i apologize for the late volume! however, sometimes things need to marinate for a little longer than anticipated <3 i wanted to do a volume that honored my friends and friendship as a whole, but then i had a dream about an old friend that almost devastated me. after that i realized that this had to be a volume that was also devastating. it needed to be sadder, regretful, but willing to grow despite the pain. i wasn’t willing to just hold the dream close to my heart. i knew i needed to use it. i knew that somehow it had the potential to help someone else. i also knew that this was a way to celebrate the friendships i’ve made in this chapter of my life, to show how far i’ve come and how much of my perpetual journey i’ve yet to tramp. my friends have been my cheerleaders behind HALOZINE, and i’ve had the privilege of being theirs throughout their many successes and endeavors.

i’ve unfortunately been incredibly detached from emotion these last few months. i’ve realized it when i look at my friends’ happy faces and i wasn’t able to exactly mirror their emotions. i’ve wanted to blossom and crackle with love and vitality but my body sometimes can’t catch up with my brain. but this has helped. i’ve gotten to hold the pain and the pleasure in my hands with vol. 11. my friends, my beautiful incredible shining magical friends, they are my rock. i hope you all hear me when i say that. god i love you all so much. i wish i could project that somewhere so that you all always knew.

i love you i love you i love you <3

i hope you enjoy your time in the garden, dear angels ♡

volume ten: we have always been here 🤍🩵🩷

HALOZINE wishes you all a very happy transgender day of visibility! from what is happening in india and in the united states in regards to trans people and their welfare, i wanna do my part in making sure people know that trans people will always be here. transgender and nonbinary people have been here since the conception of human history, and we deserve our time in the sunlight like everyone else. i also wanted to celebrate the power of femininity with vol. X. as an amab nonbinary person, i have always struggled with embracing my femininity, and when i came out as queer and nonbinary, i thought the struggling would stop. however, what coming out did was make me hold on to my femininity and do away with my masculinity. throughout my life, i have figured out that my goal is balance. to hold both my masculinity and femininity in my hands, merge them together, rip them apart, douse them in glitter and blood, and hold them close to me instead of letting them cause me grief. this issue, featuring the lovely iris delany and dior fantasia, displays what happens when you choose joy and love in a world of forced conformity and lowest common denominator compromises. i’m proud to call them friends, and i’m proud to someone that finds solace in traversing gender identities and presentations.

we have always been here, and we will always be here. you cannot eradicate what is forever. we are not creatable nor destroyable. we simply are.

i hope you enjoy your time in the garden, dear angels ♡

volume nine: the superbloom edition 💐🪽🪷

i feel like i’m ahead of the curve with this volume. with spring coming in next month, with WJSN ushering in the bloom hour, and everyone wishing for warmth and recognition, it’s one of those times where i feel aligned with the zeitgeist of artistry and creativity. this is the first issue where i couldn’t fit everyone’s submissions, and i hope that it happens more. i hope people submit more and more, because this is a magazine for the marginalized, the shunned, the darkened—above all else, HALOZINE is showing the divinity of queerness, of blackness, of latinidad, of everything that the world feels unsavory.

this is what i love to do. this is what i hope to turn physical in the near future. if you wish to support a future physical edition of HALOZINE, i would appreciate if you subscribed to my substack (in bio) and pledged $7/month. you will get your name/socials in the pages of the physical edition, and you get access to weekly poetry and prose and insider information into the monthly volumes of HALOZINE. more benefits will come as i think of them and make sure that they work on a grand scale.

i hope you enjoy your time in the garden, dear angels ♡

volume eight: mouth meditations 👄🧼💗

this is probably the most rushed and unplanned volume yet, but it came from a place of pain. sometimes i wonder why i procrastinate on these. i think: “if i love these, shouldn’t i invest more time in these?” but then moments of pure loneliness or sadness or a bruising of the heart happens and you feel urged to create. suddenly you’re writing poems that feel different. suddenly you’re experimenting. suddenly you’re moved by the things that might have felt so still. HALOZINE was a chance for me to experiment with art and with deadlines and with direction, and in some ways it still acts as this. however, i want to do more with it. i think it has the power to be on magazine stands and in people’s homes. i think people could love it if they found it. i love it dearly, and i would have loved something like this when i was younger. and while i’m creating for my communities, for my black siblings and my queer siblings and my latine siblings, my main audience is my inner child. i hope he feels seen by this—and despite my incapacity for speech at the moment, i hope he never feels bad for screaming again.

volume seven: my life in color 🌈🫧🪽

this one is my favorite volume yet. i love the rainbow of colors that are juxtaposed with the stories of l’ange and chapeau and god. i’m really excited to expand on their stories and personhoods. their performances were pure improv, done spur of the moment. you can feel the changes in energy and i love that. i had to tap into some scars for this, but that’s art, baby! i love what i do, i love being vulnerable and creative, and i’m glad that i ended the year with this volume. and i can’t wait to see where HALOZINE goes in 2026!

volume six: my life is a movie (is that a good thing?) 🎞️

this issue has to be one of my favorites. not only did i get the chance to interview a wonderful and talented director like annapurna sriram, i also took a chance and made myself a little short film for vol. 6! cinema has always inspired me to bring all my affinities to the table, and i find that to be such a physical process. furthermore, i think we constantly rewrite our lives for better or more interesting plotlines, which i think gives us a beautiful kind of artistic agency over our lives. we often consider ourselves almost slaves to the day by day, but art forms like cinema remind us that we don’t have to turn on autopilot and go with the flow. we can disrupt, destabilize, denature—such is the nature of life. i hope you enjoy this issue of HALOZINE! i will also be posting the full version of the short on my main account because i think it’s such a beautiful piece of art. be not afraid 🦋🦋🦋

volume five: the body as a home 🏡

this issue came to me when i was preparing to see family and go back home for thanksgiving, and i started to think about how we see home in people and in memories, and then after i watched some herby revolus’s videos, i noticed that sometimes we view home in other people. i found this article to be more visceral and physical than the previous ones, which is why i found it necessary to include myself dancing. i think this one has more of a narrative structure, which i really enjoy. i hope you will too!

volume four: the nature of rot and rebirth 🌱

this issue also didn’t make it to publication, just because i felt as if there was nothing special about it. i was very focused on the perception of this magazine, and not enough on the things i was making. but then i turned on some music, and suddenly the ideas were hitting me left and right again. this one is a bit shorter, a bit all over the place, but i think there’s something a bit defiant about it. it reminds me of tree roots fucking up sidewalks. i also admire the throughlines of sex, violence, consent, and trauma, because i think one thing that i’ve learned about human nature is that people lust for power. people love to have something over another person, because it cements the ground underneath them. but one thing about pedestals is that someone can push you off them at a moment’s notice. there’s a certain primal feeling associated with healing. i find it turns us into rabid animals until we find the solution within ourselves. we find love beating inside us, and we tear ourselves open to hold it. but why?

i find this issue to be a bit daunting, and maybe that’s why it took me so long to plan it. i’ve been having a lot of those moments, and yet i persisted through. and some beautiful things came about from them. i planted a seed and monsoons came through and drowned me, but i took root in something deep within, and i blossomed through.

this issue is pretty special to me, i realize. maybe this is what i was always meant to do. maybe this is all in my nature. maybe it’s in yours as well. plant something, and watch it grow. i dare you.

thank you to @br3ndxx for your quote. i’m very grateful to call you a colleague and friend <3

volume three: moving mountains to make movements ☆

the conception behind volume three was so rife with emotion and ideas that got away from me. first it was a dance-focused issue, then after seeing how @rosalia.vt shaped LUX into movements, i started thinking about how “movement” means so many different things. and then i realized that we are literally always moving. even when we’re dead, we’re moving through space. and that amazed me, and that inspired me to write the poem that acts as a throughline for this volume. the scope of this one is a bit wide, and it’s a bit messy, but as long as i feel good about the things i make, then that’s all that matters.

volume two: solitude and you ♡

volume two has finally arrived! this one is slightly experimental in the use of text-to-speech entries, as i wanted to illustrate the disembodiment that being alone can offer. sometimes your thoughts can feel computerized, and everything around you can feel synthetic — but the pain will stay, and stay it will for what feels like forever. i was deeply inspired by the racialized interpretations of loneliness and pain by sudan archives (@sudanarchives) and devonté hynes (@devhynes), which is why the art pieces have them tagged. the days leading up to this issue have been very hard for me, but they culminate into an issue full of vulnerability, color, and contrast.

this also features my first spoken word poetry piece! it’s a poem that i was overthinking during the editing process, especially because it’s very vulnerable in terms of sexuality and loneliness, but usually that’s a sign that i should share it. i’m a poet by choice, and it has made its way into all of my art. for that, i am eternally grateful.

thank you to kevin (@howtosiphongas), samu (@samu.fidalgo), koko (@kavekoko), sophie (@sophiamedinaaa), megan (@ugivemeamigraine), romie (@r0m13jr), ana (@anazlore), leo (@leodenny), cleo (@cleo.collado), and jacob (@mr.peababa) for contributing your voices and your words to this issue. you’ve made this a beautiful second volume 💫🌪️🪄
