Who can get a flag? 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We get this question a lot, so here’s the rundown.

📍 Full service area: Cache, Davis, Morgan, Salt Lake, Uintah, Utah, and Weber Counties
📍 Limited service area: Duchesne, Summit, Tooele, and Wasatch Counties

If you live in one of these counties, you can host a flag. Each address can host up to four flags, so you can fly them for your whole household, or for every identity you want to celebrate.

There are three ways to fly with us:
🏳️‍⚧️ Trans Awareness Flag Campaign: Join our next campaign, with flags flying November 9 through November 21. Choose a one-time staked or mailed flag for this campaign only.
🌈 Year-Round Flag Subscription: Sign up once and take part in all three annual campaigns: Trans Day of Visibility, Pride, and Trans Awareness Week. Placement and retrieval are included.
📦 Order a Pride Flag Anytime: We’ll ship a pride flag of your choice directly to you, any time of year.

Every flag supports our Community Fund Grants for LGBTQ+ organizations and individuals across Utah. Your flag tells your neighbors, the kids walking past, and anyone still figuring themselves out that they’re not alone.

Choose your flag via the link in bio.

Volunteers wanted for Trans Awareness Week! 🏳️‍⚧️

On November 8, Project Rainbow Utah is putting trans flags in yards, on porches, and outside businesses across Utah, and we need your help to make it happen.

Our Trans Awareness Flag Campaign puts visible signs of safety and support into neighborhoods for Trans Awareness Week (November 13–19) and Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20. Every one of those flags gets there because a volunteer showed up.

📅 Delivery Day: November 8
⏰ 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
❗ Last day to sign up: November 5

Why it matters: for a trans kid walking to school, a parent supporting their child, or someone who has never seen visible support on their street, a flag on a neighbor's lawn says you are seen here, you belong here, and you are not alone. Volunteers are the reason that message reaches so many homes.

One flag host told us:

"I have had countless kids come out to me when they see my flag."

You help make moments like that possible.

No experience needed. Come solo, bring a friend, or rally your team. It's a few hours of community, fresh air, and work that matters.

Sign up through the link in bio or scan the QR code.

Our commitment to recovery means making sure everyone has a place in it. 🏳️‍⚧️

Our Executive Director, Jacey Thornton, MSW, led a virtual Transgender+ Cultural Competence Training alongside our partners at USARA, focused on supporting gender diverse people in substance use recovery spaces.

Recovery happens in community. For trans and gender diverse people, that community isn’t always ready to welcome them. Small moments, like a misused name or an unchallenged comment in group, can be the difference between someone coming back or walking away.

The training covered:
✨ Distinguishing sex, gender, and sexual orientation
✨ Recognizing bias and barriers to recovery support
✨ Responding to mistakes with a brief, useful repair
✨ Interrupting harmful group comments

We don’t need perfect understanding to offer genuine respect. We can uphold boundaries without withdrawing compassion. And everyone deserves access to recovery.

💙 Interested in becoming a sponsor? Reach out to Jacey at jacey@projectrainbowutah.org to receive a free, evidence based training.

Thank you to @usara_utahrecovers for your partnership and for showing up for our gender diverse community in recovery.

In the 1950s and 60s, being gay meant being labeled sick, criminal, or both. Barbara Gittings spent her life refusing to accept either label.

As a college student, she went looking for books about people like her and found almost nothing except psychiatric texts calling her an illness. So she set out to change the story.

In 1958 she founded the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, the first lesbian rights organization in the United States, and later edited its national magazine, The Ladder. In 1965 she joined some of the very first public pickets for gay rights, in front of the White House and Independence Hall. These were people risking their jobs and their safety just to be seen.

Then she took on the psychiatric establishment directly. Her organizing helped bring about the 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association’s list of mental disorders.

She never forgot those empty library shelves either. For more than fifteen years she led the American Library Association’s gay task force, fighting to put honest, affirming books into the hands of anyone who went looking.

Today she’s remembered as the mother of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. We build on what pioneers like Barbara started.

Your support makes a huge impact. 🌈

A recent article from them. shows that large-scale funding for queer and trans organizations has been slowing down. Paired with the way many of our elected leaders seem focused on demonizing and scapegoating queer folks, it’s a difficult time for our community.

One way we fight back is through our Community Fund Grants, which support amazing organizations and passionate individuals creating affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ Utahns. With your help, the Community Fund has distributed more than $450,000 since 2018, including $67,200 to 20+ grantees this year alone. All of it is made possible by our flag hosts and generous sponsors.

When national support pulls back, local support matters more than ever.

If your business is ready to stand with Utah’s LGBTQ+ community, we’d love to partner with you. Sponsors are featured on our website, social media, and flag campaigns, and help put resources directly into the hands of the people doing this work.

Learn more and start the conversation via the link in bio, where you’ll also find the full article.

Fly a trans flag this November. 🏳️‍⚧️

Project Rainbow Utah's Trans Awareness Flag Campaign is open, and there's a way for everyone to take part, wherever you live.

🏡 Staked flags: Our volunteers deliver and stake your flag on November 8. It stays up through Trans Awareness Week (November 13–19) and Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, and we pick it up afterward.

📬 Mailed flags: Outside our service area, or prefer not to display a staked flag? Choose a full-size or garden flag mailed to you. It's yours to keep.

🎁 Get one, give one: Higher participation levels help put flags in more yards across Utah.

💙 Donate only: Support the campaign without hosting a flag.

Why it matters: for trans and queer Utahns, a flag on a neighbor's lawn is a visible signal of safety and support. One flag host told us:

"I have had countless kids come out to me when they see my flag."

That's what one flag can do.

📍 Staked flags in Cache, Davis, Morgan, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber Counties, plus limited areas of Summit, Tooele, Uintah, Duchesne, and Wasatch Counties. Not sure if you're covered? Mailed flags are available anywhere.
✨ New this year: up to four staked flags at one address
💵 Participation starts at $20

Every flag also supports the Community Fund, which has distributed more than $450,000 to LGBTQ+ organizations and artists across Utah since 2018.

Sign up through the link in bio.

Twenty-eight years ago today, Matthew Shepard died.

Matthew was 21. He was a student at the University of Wyoming who loved theater, politics, and travel, and who hoped to build a career in human rights. In October 1998, outside Laramie, he was brutally attacked because he was gay and left alone in the cold. He died in a Colorado hospital on October 12.

His death shook the country. It also moved people to act. His parents, Judy and Dennis Shepard, turned unimaginable grief into decades of advocacy. In 2009, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act became federal law, extending protections to people targeted because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender, or disability.

We remember Matthew not only for how his life ended, but for who he was and for everything his family has built in his name. And we hold space for every LGBTQ+ person whose story never made the news.

Here in Utah, that work continues in neighborhoods, classrooms, and homes. Every flag we place, every grant we fund, and every graduate we celebrate is part of building a state where no one has to wonder whether they are safe being who they are.

If today feels heavy, you don't have to carry it alone. Our partners at @flourishtherapyinc and @archeshealing offer affirming mental health care. You can call or text 988 anytime, and LGBTQ+ young people can reach The Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386.

Learn more about Matthew's legacy through the link in bio.

Rest in power, Matthew.

🌈 National Coming Out Day

Coming out is often talked about like a single moment. But for so many people, it's a long, quiet journey, carried in the heart long before it's ever spoken aloud.

Holding your identity alone can be heavy. Heavy the way secrets are heavy. Heavy the way hope is heavy, the way truth presses on you until it finally finds air. Today is about honoring that weight, and celebrating the courage it takes to set it down.

Coming out isn't about becoming someone new. It's about finally letting yourself be seen as who you've always been. It's the first full breath after years of shallow ones.

Whether your coming out was loud, quiet, joyful, complicated, ongoing, or still somewhere ahead of you, your story is worthy. Your identity is worthy. You are worthy.

For those who are out: thank you for your visibility. For those who aren't: your safety matters more than your timeline. For those somewhere in between: you are not alone in the in-between.

Coming out is never a requirement. But when it's possible, it can be a kind of freedom, the kind that ripples outward and makes room for others to breathe too.

We celebrate every person carrying their truth today, whether it's shared with the world or still held close. You deserve a world where your identity is never a burden, only a beginning.
