The sweetest mama otter 🤎. According to the locals, she is pregnant and regularly comes to this little sheltered spot between the dock pilings to sleep and be left alone. I loved that everyone seemed to know her routine and quietly respected her space.

And apparently I missed #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek. This year’s theme was “Rooted in Resilience,” which I love, especially knowing how incredible their return to Glacier Bay has been. They were absent from the area for decades, and now thousands of sea otters call these waters home again.

The cutest patooties wrapped in kelp 🦦🤎

Long story: I was literally fighting for my life trying to get this photo. We were on a little rubber Zodiac somewhere in the Inian Islands, and the water was super ROUGH. We were bouncing around while the kelp bed was moving up and down. All of a sudden, these two little faces popped up, and I started clicking like my life depended on it 😭. After some tweaks in Lightroom, I am obsessed with how it turned out. Not the best or sharpest but they are too adorable not to post.

I find it funny how peaceful the final photo looks because absolutely nothing about taking it was peaceful 😂

Nothing could have prepared me for the absolute chaos of hearing a Steller sea lion colony for the first time. 😂 The males especially seemed to have a lot to say but It was so special getting to watch the dynamic in this community play out. I would also like to have a word with them, but I fear I wouldn’t be able to get one in (not mad at all).

I love this scene so much. These adorable sea lions just chilling on the rocks with the ocean crashing around them. I can still smell the air and feel the rush of wind against my face.

Side note: those sea lions I posted yesterday were in Southeast Alaska, where the eastern population has recovered enough to be removed from the endangered species list. These guys were in Kenai Fjords and are part of the western population, which is still endangered after major declines in their population linked to changes in food availability, fishing interactions, predation, and other environmental pressures. Their numbers have been slowly improving overall, although recovery hasn’t been the same everywhere. Very happy to see them out there chilling 🥺.

Dawes Glacier calving in Endicott Arm 🧊

We spent the morning traveling through the protected Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness before taking Zodiacs through the floating ice to view the glacier from a respectful distance. While calving is a natural part of a tidewater glacier’s life, the broader loss and retreat of glaciers throughout Southeast Alaska is a much bigger concern.

A strong reminder that these beautiful places, and the animals that depend on them, deserve to be protected.
