When I was a little girl, I saw myself on television through A Different World in the ’80s and ’90s. I loved the elegance, intelligence, and confidence it represented so much that my mother bought me a vintage “Tiffany’s” style phone for my room and my first vintage fur coat with gloves to wear to church. ✨

I was dreaming before I even knew I was dreaming.

Years later, my first corporate magazine job gave me the opportunity to escort Mrs. Jasmine Guy to the radio station and Neiman Marcus for lunch. Inside, I was screaming because I was sitting with a woman my mother had placed in front of me as an example of excellence.

Over strawberry butter and popovers at Neiman’s café, she told me:
“Don’t let them pigeonhole you into doing just one thing. You can do multiple things.”

I never forgot that.

A North Atlanta High School alumna, a dancer like little old me, an actress, producer, director, and creator, she showed me what was possible.

Then, decades later, I was blessed with the assignment to help reimagine Whitley Gilbert for A Different World. I looked up to God and felt Him wink at me.

“What would Whitley look like now?”

The assignment was fragile, layered, and sacred. I handled her story with care, love, and protection because legacy deserves respect.

My mother taught me to honor our elders because they carry wisdom, sacrifice, and the foundation we stand on today.

So today, we celebrate this Queen. 👑
We honor her. We respect her. We protect the legacy she helped create.
