Here’s what I do and look forward to doing more of this year.

It’s winter quiet now and an ideal time to start putting a garden plan together for spring, so if you like what you see, drop me a message on here or email - prunadelica@gmail.com 🌴

When it comes to plants and gardens I can design it, plant it, prune it, spruce it and continue to look after it. It’s just me; personal, bespoke garden care from the very start.

Even if it’s something I can’t do myself, chances are I know someone who can. The horti-community is strong in Margate.

Here’s to a fruitful year, I’m looking forward to meeting some of you soon.

Cheers,

prunadelica.com is now LIVE 💚

You can now see what’s going on, read about projects, get in touch and hover a little bit longer than you need to on those 5 ⭐️ reviews without algorithmic distractions.

HUGE thanks to @isavedalex for creating this beautiful looking place. I’ve been toying with the idea of a bloggy-ish website for a while and Alex just got it. A total breezy joy to work with and I’m really good local company on the @palmbay.digital portfolio aswell, a real honour. Thanks, man 💚

My intention is to make it a slightly longer form version of what I do here - posts about projects, planty highlights, inspirations, recommendations, all the good stuff.

Again, can’t praise Alex highly enough. If creative flair, tech sav and good vibes are your thing, he’s the website builder for you.

Cheers, all. Enjoy✌️ by @prunadelica

Pedalled over to Ramsgate for my first visit to @grooveisinthegaff since planting a few weeks back. So great to see it all (pretty much) settling in and filling out despite the mad 🌞 of recent times. We’ve lost a couple of fennel but out of 400+ plants I’ll take that.

Loads of highlights while walking round but the Globe Artichoke foliage dominating pic 2 and the lush shady border (6) are my top two. For now.

Hats off again to @pipjolley & @splintzuk for being the greatest hosts / clients and of course @stevenmarsdengardens who somehow managed to carve out and landscape my curvy vision to the absolute millimetre.

Taking on more projects like this over the autumn and winter so if you like what you see, pop a message over.

Slowed things right down this weekend with a trip to @big_drewland ‘s place just outside Canterbury. Honestly, it blew me away - there’s a real sense of undesigned freedom in this garden; loads going on, combinations I doubt you’ll find in planting guides, hints of Dixter for sure. I loved it!

Was brilliant to see Lola so into it aswell. Any garden that holds the attention span of a 10 year old for a few hrs is doing something right.

I geeked out on the plants, bagged loads of inspiration and ideas then fell asleep in the shade while Lola wandered around happy as. Beautiful.

Was great meeting you, Andrew. Thanks for the hospitality and the best handshake I’ve had in years. Looking forward to coming back when we’ve had some of the wet stuff!

Follow @big_drewland and look out for the next open garden. It’s a solid 10.

Checked in on another recent project after work yesterday. This Palm Bay front garden was designed earlier this year and planted at the start of May (see pics a few posts back).

Everything’s settling in and filling out beautifully. There’s a Stipa gigantea in there that’ll take some time to live up to its name but once it does, there’ll be another much taller element for the sun to kiss.

The highlight in this one for me is the fragrant waft when you’re downwind from the fennel peaking over the wall. Salty air and fennel - the greatest smell on 🌍.

So happy with how the planting has settled in at this recent Cliftonville project. Still a lot of height to come with the taller grasses and perennials such as the Veronicastrum, Fennel and Digitalis but already plenty of early promise. This garden’s only a few weeks old, over the years self-seeding will be encouraged to create a wild and naturalistic softener to the clean lines of the garden room and pavers.

The Rudbeckia (pic 2) are doing their best to steal the show at the minute; these were one of the client’s must-have plants so I’ve got groups in succession from the top of the garden down to the bottom. Rudbeckia seedheads are notoriously brilliant in winter aswell when the petals drop and we’re left with the black central cone. Lots of seasonal structure here.

Next time I’ll get some pics of the beautiful multi-stem Amelanchier trees. There’s three in there, real eye-catchers that again has something to offer all year round.

I designed, planted and will continue to look after this garden - from initial meeting to aftercare. Now some really exciting projects coming up that I can’t wait to share.

Stay tuned 💚 taken in Cliftonville, Kent, United Kingdom by @prunadelica

This one has been such a trip - my biggest project to date.

Pip & Dan @grooveisinthegaff got in touch as they wanted to give their garden a sit & chill, family-friendly, hosty lift. The brief was ‘English Mid-century modern’ to compliment their bungalow. Music to my ears, tbh.

Part of the change was to create a small car parking area at the the back of the garden with a path through to the house. Swapping out what was mostly lawn into something that draws you in.

I wanted to make it an immersive, naturalistic stroll from car to house so have gone with the curvy paths and borders, again inspired by shapes of the chalk on our local coastal beds, fairly densely planted with 400+ perennials, evergreen shrubs and grasses - some of which will be touching 1.5 / 2m over time.

There’s a strong architectural focus in the plant selections - sphericals, flats, spires, jags, softs, wisps, narrow straights - nothing too dense other than the low lying shrubs that anchor it all together. There’s purples, pinks, terracottas, whites, yellows, greens and later in the year there’ll be sweet browns.

The whole scheme is worked around an existing apple (which needs a trim) and bay tree (which got a trim). All paths lead by them to the house and new seating area. Jesse’s future play den will be set among these two trees so I lifted the canopy of the bay and made the paths among the beds narrower here to make it more immersive and vibey for younguns. The new shape of the bay also mimics the Phillyrea domes - linking the old with the new.

The real hero here though has been @stevenmarsdengardens who somehow managed to dig out the existing lawn, fill in the old pond and landscape the planting areas exactly to plan, by himself, in the middle of a heatwave. Unreal. A real master of his craft. More to come from us.

Finally, HUGE thanks to Pip, Dan and Jesse for being just amazing hosts and clients (‘clients’ always seems a little stiff so I’m working on a new word that) - they’ve been fantastic since day 1. Spinning off ideas, getting tasty drone footage, supplying top drawer coffee, cakes and ices when we were looking drained.

Thank you. So much.

One year on this planting @bungalowpalmbay remains a solid fave. It’s pretty much looking after itself now, something I’ll always strive for in my designs, I just pick out a few weeds, give the Stipa grasses a comb if they’re getting too big and an annual cut back.

Some really cool work coming up that I’ll be sharing more of soon along with recents then I’ll be taking on planting projects over autumn and winter.

Enjoy.

I’ll do a more planty post on this when it’s cooled off a bit and I’ve got the energy for words. For now though, here’s a few 📸 of my latest project in sunny, sunny Cliftonville.

It’s not finished yet; putting a juicy mulch layer down next week and then some shrubs later in the year but it’s pretty close.

Plants, as always, by the fantastic @howgreennursery and the new @sneeboer spade has reached ‘never leave home without it’ status already.

Swipe through for the ‘before’ pic and original sketch - both from January. I based the shapes of the paths and borders on the chalk seabeds of Botany and Kingsgate bay - a little nod to the locale.

Stay cool.

If you’re going for a bite @the_perfect_place_to_grow_cic say hello to this border I designed and planted back in November @tkestudios 🎨

This is part of a much longer scheme, the more ‘woodlandy’ section to the back right was planted a few weeks back - soon as that fills out I’ll show it all in situ. For now though, my faves are the Veronicastrum and Thalictrum in pics 3 and 4. Nowhere near fully grown but showing much promise.

The whole process of checking in on a new planting every couple of days through the growing season will never, ever grow old.

Recent planting, the first of the year. An open, sunny blank canvas by the sea…beautiful.

The curved bed is a nod to the Deco-y architecture and the plants are my coastal dream team - Stipa and Calamagrostis grasses, Verbena b, Fennel, Euphorbia, Achillea, Stachys and more.

The site itself was shallow soil on top of chalk so a lot of blister inducing ground prep was involved. I dug in over half a tonne of organic matter to raise the soil level and give the plants an initial boost.

Really looking forward to seeing this one fill out and pop over the next few months. Amazing clients again. Honestly, what a joy.
