Pitt State student Gabriela Mongelos, a junior from Paraguay pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, was selected through a statewide competition to perform in a masterclass led by legendary pianist Jerome Lowenthal of The Juilliard School.

The masterclass was held Saturday, Sept. 19, at Wichita State University as part of the Kansas Music Teachers Association State Conference. Gabriela, who studies piano with Dr. Reena Natenberg at Pittsburg State University, performed the first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata, Op. 22.

Being selected to perform in the masterclass provided Gabriela with an opportunity to share her musical talents with fellow musicians and receive instruction from one of the world’s renowned piano educators and performers.

Gabriela’s achievement highlights the exceptional talent and dedication of Pitt State’s international students and the opportunities available to students pursuing music at the university. by @psapittstate

Once a Gorilla, always a Gorilla — even when celebrating special moments thousands of miles from Pittsburg!

A group of Pitt State Gorillas from Paraguay recently gathered to celebrate the wedding of fellow Gorilla and alumna Ysis Gonzalez. Ysis graduated from Pittsburg State University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and Marketing. She also completed the Intensive English Program at Pitt State.

It was wonderful to see so many Pitt State alumni and friends together in Paraguay, continuing the connections and friendships they built during their time at Pitt State.

Congratulations to Ysis and Roland! We wish them a lifetime of happiness, and we’re always proud to see our Gorillas celebrating together around the world. taken in Asunción, Paraguay by @psapittstate

More than 60 Pittsburg State University alumni and friends gathered in Asunción, Paraguay, on May 27 for a special Gorilla Gathering celebrating Pitt State connections and the 20th anniversary of the PSU in Paraguay Program.

Hosted by the Office of International Programs and Services and Alumni and Constituent Relations in partnership with Comité Paraguay Kansas (CPK), the event brought together generations of Gorillas from across Paraguay.

The gathering highlighted the long-standing Kansas-Paraguay partnership through Partners of the Americas, an international volunteer organization founded in 1964. Kansas and Paraguay are paired through this partnership to promote social, economic, and cultural development through people-to-people exchanges.

Attendees included some of the first Paraguayans to study at Pitt State in the late 1990s, recent graduates from May 2026, participants in the BECAL Scholarship Program, alumni of the Teacher Exchange Program, and participants in the Intensive English Program. Board members of Comité Paraguay Kansas also attended, along with members of Trio Latinoamericano, who recently performed at Pittsburg State University.

The evening celebrated the 20th anniversary of the PSU in Paraguay Program, which brings Pittsburg State faculty to Asunción approximately once each month to teach intensive three-week general education courses.

Representing Pittsburg State at the event were Dr. Jason Clemensen, associate dean; Dr. Donna Zerr, assistant professor; Dr. Carissa Gober, associate professor; Dr. Bobby Winters, professor; and Aaron Hurt from the Office of International Programs and Services.

Guests enjoyed refreshments, connected with fellow Gorillas, and viewed a campus update video produced by Alumni and Constituent Relations highlighting new initiatives and developments at Pittsburg State University. The event celebrated the lasting partnership between Pitt State, its alumni, and friends throughout Paraguay. taken in Asunción, Paraguay by @psapittstate
