INTRODUCING OUR FIRST JUDGE

We are delighted to announce Charles Justin AM as the first judge for the inaugural Poimena Prize for Abstraction.

Together with Leah Justin, Charles co-founded the Justin Art House Museum (JAHM), opening their home and contemporary art collection to the public through exhibitions and programs.

An architect, collector and passionate advocate for the arts, Charles has built a collection with a strong focus on abstraction—reflecting his enduring interest in form, space, colour and the ideas that connect art and architecture.

We are thrilled to welcome Charles to the judging panel and look forward to sharing our next judge soon.

For more than ten years, I’ve wanted to create a prize dedicated entirely to abstraction in Australia. I’m delighted that this long held idea is finally becoming a reality: the Poimena Prize for Abstraction.

Abstraction has been such an important part of my own life and practice. I hope this prize gives artists across Australia, whether emerging or established, a place to share their work and be recognised. The winning artist will receive a $15,000 non-acquisitive prize.

I’m deeply grateful to Launceston Grammar, Madeline Gordon Gallery and Harrison Agents Launceston for helping bring this idea to life.

Entries open on 1 October 2026. If you work in abstraction, I’d love you to consider entering. And whether you’re an artist or someone who loves art, please share the news and help this new prize find its community.

New series by Paul Snell - "Linger" 🟣

Australian artist Paul Snell bridges photography and digital painting by "decoding and re-coding" real-world images into simplified, abstract compositions. Distilling color and form to their essence, he converts these digital files into luminous Chromogenic prints mounted on Plexiglass in small, exclusive editions. Rather than documenting external reality, Snell’s contemplative works offer moments of stillness, inviting viewers into quiet reflection and pure visual presence.

Featured artworks: Linger # 202601 and Linger # 202602

Diptych. Edition: 1/3

Year: 2026
Edition: Multiple
Technique: Archival Pigment Print on Chromajet Metallic Pearl Face-mounted 3mm Matte Plexiglas
Size: 150 X 150 X 0.1 cm

Price: £6,000

Works can be hung with the WallCleat system. Available in 4-5 weeks turnaround.

Paul Snell
B. 1968 Australia, Hobart
Lives and works in Launceston, Tasmania.
Paul Snell is an Australian artist whose work invites viewers into a contemplative space—a suspended moment where time pauses, and the urge to move forward is held at bay. By stripping images of representational clarity, Snell allows abstract forms to emerge, engaging the senses rather than dictating a narrative. Through layered minimalism and intentional omissions, his work embodies stillness and suspension, offering a reprieve from the constant noise of the digital world and creating a grounding experience where beauty lies in presence rather than progress. Merging digital processes with materiality, Snell’s practice explores abstraction and minimalism in contemporary photography, resulting in works with a distinctly painterly impact. Inspired by 20th-century modernist artists, he distils the essential elements of form and colour through reduction and visual synthesis. His work delves deeply into the emotional and sensory power of colour, investigating the interplay between optics and the materiality of light and colour. By examining contrasts such as object and screen, surface and edge, and reflection and absorption, Snell shapes a dynamic relationship within his creations. Often described by critics as “digital painting, Snell’s work blurs the boundaries between photography and painting.

As my time @ the Cité internationale des arts draws to a close I am filled with gratitude. The past 2 months have provided me the time and opportunity to think, play and experiment. Many ideas are just finding air but it is defiantly an exciting time.

I must thank the University of Tasmania for providing not only the studio but also the launchpad for this new body of work.

Stripping away representational clarity allows abstract forms to emerge, creating immersive experiences that slow perception and invite quiet reflection.

Having just witnessed the Paris edition of the solar eclipse of the sun, apparently the first time since 1912. I thought i would drop one of my new works that has that vibe. Nicely supported by Pink Floyd.

A new series is beginning to take shape.

Most of my works have one-word titles — small, succinct words that don’t describe the image, but suggest what it might do to perception.

For this new series, I keep coming back to four:

HUSH

SWELL

LINGER

SEEP

So, for something a little different, I thought I’d put it out there.

Which one resonates with you?

I’d love to know.
