We are incredibly proud to celebrate our represented artist Paul Snell and the launch of the Poimena Prize for Abstraction, an exciting new initiative dedicated to recognising and celebrating abstract art in Australia.

A vision Paul has held for more than a decade, the prize reflects his longstanding commitment to abstraction and his passion for creating opportunities for artists across Australia. Open to both emerging and established artists, the prize offers a $15,000 non-acquisitive award.

It is wonderful to see Paul's vision come to life, and we congratulate him, along with Launceston Grammar, Madeline Gordon Gallery and Harrison Agents Launceston, on bringing this important initiative to the Australian arts community.

Entries are now open, and we encourage artists working in abstraction to apply.

HIGH CEILING HEAVEN. An unconventional dark timber ceiling makes this space. Pale walls are usually teamed with an even paler ceiling, but here warm wood sits high overhead, making the room feel rich and cocooning. Proof that going dark up top doesn't have to make a room feel smaller. It can make it feel taller.

Paul Snell
B. 1968 Australia, Hobart
Lives and works in Launceston, Tasmania.
Paul Snell is an Australian artist whose work invites viewers into a contemplative space—a suspended moment where time pauses, and the urge to move forward is held at bay. By stripping images of representational clarity, Snell allows abstract forms to emerge, engaging the senses rather than dictating a narrative. Through layered minimalism and intentional omissions, his work embodies stillness and suspension, offering a reprieve from the constant noise of the digital world and creating a grounding experience where beauty lies in presence rather than progress. Merging digital processes with materiality, Snell’s practice explores abstraction and minimalism in contemporary photography, resulting in works with a distinctly painterly impact. Inspired by 20th-century modernist artists, he distils the essential elements of form and colour through reduction and visual synthesis. His work delves deeply into the emotional and sensory power of colour, investigating the interplay between optics and the materiality of light and colour. By examining contrasts such as object and screen, surface and edge, and reflection and absorption, Snell shapes a dynamic relationship within his creations. Often described by critics as “digital painting, Snell’s work blurs the boundaries between photography and painting.
