Kunlyna (also known as Kay) Tauch has been following and supporting The Khmer Collective since it was in its newborn stages. In fact, he was the very first person I decided I wanted to meet from Long Beach. And so when I booked my trip, he was the first to know.

I have long admired the work that he does and the insightful conversations we have had since. It is not often you meet people in our community who care for providing repair and resources to those who are in deep need. What I cherish and value the most about our unlikely friendship is the childlike wonder that we both carry with us in our adult lives.

Kay serves as a Certified Peer Support Specialist with a focus on re-entry, CAMS-I Anger Management Instructor and Program Facilitator with The Prism Way. TPW was founded by individuals with a deep sense of purpose: to provide authentic healing and support for men and women who have experienced the trauma of incarceration, helping them reclaim their dignity and self-worth while repairing families and restoring communities.

He offers a unique perspective, as a storyteller/author who was formerly incarcerated, to our Khmer community. And I hope that in due time I get to be there on the day he opens up a center where the youth can have a safe and comfortable space to learn and express themselves through creativity. taken in Signal Hill by @pss_kay

This moment is a bridge across time: from quiet uncertainty to these first steps we take together. A year ago, he held back; today, we dance in freedom. Life’s mess, life’s magic—I’m here for every step. šŸ’™āœØ taken in Long Beach, California by @pss_kay

šŸŽ¬ **COMING SOON — EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KAY** @pss_kay

**BEYOND PRISON WALLS: A STORY OF HOPE & REDEMPTION**

Meet **Kay**, a Cambodian-American whose extraordinary life journey is a story of hardship, incarceration, reflection, and transformation.

What does it mean to lose your freedom, confront your past, and find hope for a second chance?

Beyond the prison walls is a HUMAN STORY — one of identity, family, forgiveness, redemption, and the yearning to find a place to call HOME.

We're honored to give Kay, now a writer, speaker and advocate, our platform to share his story, in his own words.

Because EVERYONE has a story worth hearing. šŸ’›

šŸŽ„ Exclusive interview coming soon on **#AsianAmericans**.

When I was sitting in a cell I would dream about these moments that I am having now. I used to dream about driving at night, walking the stage for graduation, meeting my family at the gate, and spending time with my son; never in 1 million years would I have thought that those dreams will become reality. Never in 1 million years what I have thought that those dreams were accompany every emotion. Freedom has been the hardest thing for me, but I have never had a trouble with living. I am living in my freedom, in the hard times, and easy times, and the joyful times; and even when it hurt hurts, I am enjoying everything about it. Thank you Judge Daniel J Lowenthal for your grace. Thank you Miss Nancy, I promise to make you proud. taken in Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall by @pss_kay

My sis flew in from Texas to capture a night that felt bigger than music. šŸŽ¶šŸ‡°šŸ‡

Thanks to Vtech, traditional Khmer sounds continue to find new life in a new generation. What was once at risk of fading is now filling rooms, dance floors, and hearts.

One of my favorite moments didn’t happen on stage. I caught my sister off guard and asked her what she thought about Long Beach. She admitted she didn’t know what to expect. But what she found was a community that welcomed her with open arms, genuine conversation, and a seat at the table.

Sometimes we forget what we’ve built here. Long Beach isn’t just home to one of the largest Cambodian communities outside of Cambodia. It’s a place where strangers become family before the night is over.

To my sis: you’re always welcome here. Slide through anytime. The food will be hot, the stories will be long, and somebody’s auntie is probably going to adopt you before the night ends. ā¤ļøšŸ‡°šŸ‡ videošŸ“ø by: @azteca.aesthetics my mentee 🄹 taken in Long Beach, California by @pss_kay

Sometimes a community just wants to be seen for all the things the headlines miss.

In this clip, KhmerGirlDidi speaks about something deeper than an event. She speaks about the need for our people to be known for more than gang culture, trauma, or the stereotypes that often get attached to our communities.

For one night, a space was created where culture took center stage. Families showed up. Friends connected. Artists performed. Stories were shared. People laughed, danced, and remembered that community is more than survival.

Maybe that’s the real power of gatherings like this. Not because they solve every problem, but because they create evidence of another narrative. A narrative where we are creators, organizers, dreamers, entrepreneurs, artists, and culture bearers.

Sometimes healing starts with having a place to belong, even if it’s just for a night.

What is something about your community that deserves more attention than the stereotypes? šŸ‘‡šŸ½ #LongBeach #CambodianCommunity #KhmerCulture #CommunityHealing #RepresentationMatters CambodianAmerican CultureOverStereotypes Belonging NarrativeChange KhmerGirlDidi videošŸ“ø by: @azteca.aesthetics my mentee 🄹 taken in Long Beach, California by @pss_kay
