Handmade Film Night exceeded our wildest dreams! The entire Grand Opening party was beyond beyond. We loved sharing the magic of hand painted film & analog video installation & video art projection. We connected with so many alumni, current & prospective students, PSU staff, elected officials, community members and more! Epic night! We are so excited for this new chapter in the School!

🎞️What is “handmade film?” Also called cameraless film, direct animation, handpainted or scratch film - these are all techniques that involve directly manipulating the surface of film. If you can get the film through a projector again later, you can do it! Students in ART 457/557: Low Tech Cinema dug into strips of 16mm film on Day 1 of class a few weeks back!

Come explore all four floors filled with art, performances, activities, food, drinks, printing, music + more. Students, alumni, friends + community, we’d love to see you there!

In the VIDEO/TIME-BASED ARTS room: Hand-painted film workshop - take home your own strips of moving image film! Led by PSU alumni Cadie Godula & Shannon Neale who will show you how to draw, paint, dye, scratch, collage directly onto film! Also: an exhibition of recent video by students, including Aiden Kelley & Lily Fisher, displayed on our collection of Cathode Ray Tube monitors.

In the Crit Space in the hall: videos of the new building - created just days ago! - by students in our Intro to Video Art course!

In the PHOTO rooms: MINI PHOTOBOOK FAIR + DARKROOM PHOTOGRAM PRINTING + PHOTOBOOTH!

The Jordan Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design has a new home + we want you to celebrate with us!

Join us Tuesday, October 13 from 4–8pm for the Grand Opening of the new Jordan Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design at Portland State.

In the Video/Time-Based Art Studio: We will welcome back PSU Film alums Cadie Goldula and Shannon Neale to guide us in a 16mm Handmade Film Workshop where you will learn to draw, paint, dye, scratch, collage directly onto the surface of the film. You can take film home with you! Cadie now curates film as part of Experimental Exposure & Shannon now curates film as part of Spectrum Between.

Our fleet of vintage Cathode Ray Tube monitors will display video artwork by current and recent students Aiden Kelley, Lily Fisher, and more!

Come explore all four floors filled with art, performances, activities, food, drinks, printing, music + more.

End of an era… Goodbye to FMH aka “Oldberger” aka Neuberger Hall, our HOME for our studio art classes since the 1960s. How many art students passed through your studios over these +/-65 years??? Thank you for your years of service to us. We will miss you, but we will still be neighbors! Look for us just two doors down the park in our beautiful new building

📺 ALEX WOODWARD APPRECIATION POST! 📽️✨

Adjunct Instructor Alex Woodward has been a bright light of enthusiasm, knowledge, creativity, and compassion for many years at PSU. He has taught many courses including "Art 257: Introduction to Video Art," "Art 457: Low Tech Cinema," and most notably, "Art 355: Video Installation," an exciting course the culminates in a public exhibition each winter.

Alex is departing from our teaching community to pursue professional video and photography work. A graduate of PSU's MFA in Contemporary Art (Studio Art), Alex is also an accomplished artist working in analog and digital video and photography. We will miss Alex's presence around the School, and we wish him well in his future endeavors!

📦That’s a wrap! We packed & moved out of the Photo/Video/Time studio that had been our home for many years. This coming fall we will welcome students & community members to our ✨new Schnitzer School of Art, Art History & Design building!✨

We will have all new facilities for Photo, Video, Time-Based Arts & everything else our incredible School has to offer! A new darkroom, computer lab, shooting studios, classrooms, editing/sound/animation booths, galleries & more!

In her project, "Weathering Time," Nancy has been taking a photo of herself every day since 1982! We all got to be in her photo for April 14, 2026! (posted here)
