Make sure not to miss Melanie Flood @melanie.flood , next Wednesday, October 28th at Noon, for this year’s final Lunchtime Photography Talk. No tickets are required, come as you are! Artist Melanie Flood discusses her thirty-eight-year photographic archive and the “paraphernalia” that runs through it. The word began as a legal term for the property a married woman kept as her own—such as her clothing, jewelry, toiletries, and personal effects—yet these objects are routinely dismissed as superficial because they are coded female. She considers the forces that shaped her practice, from the formation of gender ideals to the professionalization of the arts, and the space midlife creates to strip constraints away.   Melanie Flood (b. NY; lives and works in Portland, OR) employs photography as a tool for examining how femininity is constructed, commodified, and performed. Working across self-portraiture, studio still lifes, and vernacular image-making, her work draws on the archive, beauty culture, and the aesthetics of everyday feminine life. Recent exhibitions include the Schneider Museum of Art, Ashland, OR; ILY2, Portland, OR; Ruschwoman, Chicago, IL; Fourteen30 Contemporary, Portland, OR; and Ditch Projects, Springfield, OR. She has received support from the Oregon Arts Commission, the Ford Family Foundation, and the Regional Arts and Cultural Council. From 2008 to 2022 she founded and directed Melanie Flood Projects, an artist-run exhibition space established in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice from Portland State University, where she teaches in the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design. #melanieflood #lunchtimephotographytalk #PAMPhotoCouncil #artisttalks #portlandoregon

Art Every Day: The 40 Day Ritual art show * critique * celebration Tuesday & Thursday June 2 & 4, 2026 11am-12:40pm Portland State University 1855 SW Broadway 2nd Floor critique spaces access info: an elevator can take you to the 2nd floor For the first time, in the Spring of 2026, Julie Perini tasked a group of artists to engage with the art of habit making by creating art daily. Through conversation with visiting daily art practitioners, learning from case studies by well known artists, and implementing a self prescribed rule set, each of us developed an art practice that we committed to for the duration of the class. Art Every Day: The 40 Day Ritual is a celebration and showing of the work artists in this cohort created with the potential to inspire reflection regarding attendee’s relationships towards daily practice. Visitors will have the opportunity to view each artist present their work as well as listen in on critiques. Like our art itself, our showing is ephemeral so please join us on Tuesday June 2nd and Thursday June 4th from 11-12:40 in the Fariborz Maseeh Hall crit spaces free of admission. 👏poster design: Jun Tellez Rosales 👏copywriting: Zackary Walker 👏substitute/guest teacher: Max Swanson
