Experience the powerful and dramatic soundscape of The Innocents.

Now the subject of an award-winning documentary film, The Innocents is social justice advocacy through performance art that cuts to the emotional core of the human experience. Using a variety of found-object and homemade instruments, electronic soundscapes and spoken texts, the work is an effort to delve deeply into the current issues surrounding the subject of wrongful imprisonment and exoneration, as well as a commitment to connect with the communities in which it is performed.

PSU Theater Arts students are stepping into the professional world while they’re still in school! They learn by doing and build valuable connections with potential employers.

One example is PSU Theater Arts’ partnership with the Fertile Ground Festival, which gives students hands-on experience as trained venue technicians at the Lincoln Hall Boiler Room Studio. Through the program, students learn to write and run lighting, sound and projection cues, operate technical systems and work directly with visiting artists, all while earning credit and a stipend.

It’s an opportunity to develop not only the technical skills needed to bring productions to life, but also the bigger-picture thinking that helps creative teams flourish.

At the same time, Fertile Ground brings new work by Portland’s community of theater artists to PSU’s Boiler Room Studio, creating a space where students, visiting artists and audiences can connect and collaborate.

🎭 Now, the venue lottery is open for the 2027 Fertile Ground Festival! If you’re interested in producing a show as part of the festival, submit your application for the venue lottery.

Follow @fertilegroundpdx to learn more and find out how to apply.

🎶 Two ensembles. More ways to sing.

We’re excited to introduce VocaLab, a brand-new vocal ensemble at Portland State University!

VocaLab is a place to build your skills and find your voice as an ensemble singer. Explore pop, jazz, and contemporary music while developing harmony singing, musicianship, stylistic versatility, sight-singing, and confidence performing with a group. No previous sight-singing or music-reading experience is required.

Looking for the next challenge? Vocal Collective is PSU’s intermediate/advanced jazz and contemporary vocal ensemble, designed for singers ready to take their ensemble singing, improvisation, musicianship, sight-reading, and performance skills to the next level.

Whether you’re building your foundation or ready to push your artistry further, there’s a place for you in PSU Jazz & Contemporary Vocal Ensembles.

🎤 Auditions and screenings are open for both VocaLab and Vocal Collective!

"Do You Feel Anger?"
By Mara Nelson-Greenberg
Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply disturbing. An empathy coach arrives at a workplace warped by toxic masculinity. How far can empathy go?

🧙🏿 February 25 - March 6, 2027
"Gretel! The Musical"
Book by Jason Tremblay & Suzan Zeder; music & lyrics by Jenn Hartmann Luck, Zeder & Tremblay
A co-production with Oregon Children's Theatre
The spellbinding journey of a young girl learning to harness her own ferocity, tend to her grief and claim her power.

💬 May 20 - 29, 2027
"Cyrano de Bergerac"
By Edmond Rostand
Freely adapted by Martin Crimp
A dazzling adaptation where skewering wordplay takes the place of traditional swordfighting, while a love triangle, built on borrowed language, sparks questions around truth, identity, and the nature of connection.
