Penn State was out in force at the annual meeting of the American Society for Ethnohistory this weekend in Tulsa. Cathleen Cahill delivered a paper, “Tessie Mobley, Chickasaw Opera Singer in Europe,” and provided a comment on the panel, “Indigenous Women, Print Culture, and
Self-Representation.” Morgan Haller’s paper, “The “Brave-Hearted Women”: Native Women’s Political Activism in Akwesasne Notes” was part of that panel.
Christina Snyder chaired a roundtable titled “Choctaw Kinship, Inheritance, and Politics: An Interdisciplinary Study of the Choctaw Net Proceeds Case.” Three Latin Americanist grad students delivered papers: Travis Meyer spoke on “More Nahua and Maya Catholicisms: A Comparative Analysis of Nahuatl, K’iche’, and Kaqchikel-language Ecclesiastical Texts.” Bruno Stori tackled “Indigenous Epistemologies from a More-than-Human Perspective in Late-Sixteenth-Century Huarochirí, Peru,” and Cesar Ovando illuminated “Contested Landscapes: The Lienzo de Quauhquechollan and the Rubble of
Conquest in Guatemala.”
Penn State graduates were also well represented. They included Ed Green, who delivered the paper “’He is abandoned, and entirely without kind and generous feelings for his family’: Gender, Property, and Allotment in the Divorce Records of the Choctaw Nation,
1865-1907,” and Rob Schawller who participated in a roundtable on “Radicalism, Rebellion, and Revolution in the Atlantic World, 1600-1900.”
Congratulations Penn Staters! You make us proud! @edgreen1995 @gilcreasemuseum @mhallaback @c4snyder by @psuhistory

We're thrilled to co-sponsor this presentation from investigative journalist Julia Harte, who explores the rich and hidden history of American citizens who fought against imperialism and dictatorship abroad, only to be excoriated at home.

Harte will present "Americans Without Borders: The Radical Activists Who Fought for U.S. Ideals Abroad While Facing Political Persecution at Home" October 22 at 3:30 p.m. in Foster Auditorium, 102 Paterno Library. by @psuhistory

Earlier this week, the Richards Center partnered with the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy and the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress to hold the symposium "New Directions in Women’s Political Participation from Revolution to Reconstruction." Bringing together scholars from across the nation and across the Atlantic, the two-day event was held in D.C. at the Library of Congress.

Cathleen Cahill, Richards Center Acting Director, and Amy Greenberg, Head of the Department of History, both commented on panels, and Hope McCaffrey, Richards Center Assistant Program Director, presented a paper titled “Antebellum Women Building Democratic Practices.” Former Richards Center predoctoral fellows Adam McNeil and Lauren Feldman, and Kate Masur, co-editor of the Journal of the Civil War Era, also participated in the symposium.
