Kathryn Woodman Leighton is best known for her portraits of Blackfeet people, including Wife and Child of Bull Plume (Maggie Bull Plume), now on view at the Palmer Museum of Art. She was also part of the Los Angeles art scene, where she painted Indigenous entertainers known as “Hollywood Indians.”
Cathleen Cahill, professor of history and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, explores how these overlooked portraits reveal a broader picture of Native American life in the early twentieth century.

🏛️ Growing up in Kane, Pennsylvania, shaped how Dawson Glogau sees the challenges families face. This summer, he took that perspective to Washington, D.C.

Dawson, a fourth-year dual major in Political Science and History, was one of 11 students to take part in the inaugural Semester in Washington Program, housed in the Department of Political Science. He interned with the Jewish Democratic Council of America, where he researched food assistance, housing, and maternal health in rural areas and sat in on a congressional committee meeting. 💙

Enrichment funding from the Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network helped make the experience possible. Dawson is now considering law school and a career in family law.

📲 Read his story at the link in our bio. Dawson Glogau in a blue suit and tie smiling outdoors with blurred greenery in the background.

Spring 2027: CMLIT 191N: Introduction to Video Game Culture (T Th 12:05 PM-1:20 PM)
Instructor: Eric Hayot
Description: Role-playing. It introduces students to academic discussion on and creative work in new digital forms including hypertexts, video games, cell phone novels, machinima, and more. Students will survey major debates over the meaning and value of video games, and study some of the major theoretical terms and perspectives developed to elaborate the cultural and sociological value of video games. The course extends students’ skills in literary interpretation to a variety of new objects, and makes them aware of the role medium plays in aesthetic development and production. Students will leave with a far sharper understanding of how the interpretive tools used in the humanities can be extended to include new media, and with a sense of the historical role video games have played and will continue to play in global cultural production. Because the course is historically focused, it will spend significant time looking at the differential development of video games in three major regions: the United States, Europe, and East Asia (especially Japan).

Earlier this week, the Richards Center partnered with the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy and the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress to hold the symposium "New Directions in Women’s Political Participation from Revolution to Reconstruction." Bringing together scholars from across the nation and across the Atlantic, the two-day event was held in D.C. at the Library of Congress.

Cathleen Cahill, Richards Center Acting Director, and Amy Greenberg, Head of the Department of History, both commented on panels, and Hope McCaffrey, Richards Center Assistant Program Director, presented a paper titled “Antebellum Women Building Democratic Practices.” Former Richards Center predoctoral fellows Adam McNeil and Lauren Feldman, and Kate Masur, co-editor of the Journal of the Civil War Era, also participated in the symposium.
