Why would you do this after the game is over?

If you watched Spain defeated Argentina in the World Cup final, you would have seen Leonardo Paredes assault on Eric García. If you are like most people, you’d be thinking “why did he do this”.

There is a line where Instrumental aggression in sport, where aggression is used as a tool to achieve a goal (hard tackles, man marking), becomes damaging.

Historically, Paredes has been known for his aggression in football during international events. His previous aggressive moments include 2022 quarter final against Netherlands where he kicked a football at the Netherlands bench, 2026 quarter final and semi final receiving warnings about his aggressive challenges.

His previous history of aggressive behaviour could indicate that he has some learned aggressive behaviour, alongside seeing the aggression his teammates showed could result in believing acts of aggression are acceptable on a football pitch.

He may have done this due to seeing that he is being blocked from a meaningful goal (adversity). In this case it is winning the World Cup, and Eric García was the person blocking him in the game. This was then realised by the final whistle confirming he had failed to era his goal due to him. Resulting in the activation of a belief system that dehumanises and blames another person for his shortcomings. Leading to aggressive behaviours against someone else and intended harm.

Another perspective is around deindividuation. This is where a person loses their sense of self, especially in group environments. You’ll commonly see this when you look at ‘mob mentalities’. When in sport, emotions are high and athletes are known to act completely different to how they are known to in different settings. In this case Paredes, may have lost his sense of self that would shock him when watching the video back.

Nevertheless, there could be several reasons to why he did what he did but it still remains that the behaviour he displayed is unacceptable and dangerous in any setting.

How should this type of behaviour be dealt with?

Do you notice what @k.mbappe does here?

Captains are no strangers to being interviewed after a loss, and the words they use when speaking to the media has a greater impact on the team than we’d think.

Here we can hear humility but also a sense of ownership over the performance France had against Spain.

Kyllian Mbappe is not blaming external factors, he is not talking about luck, the referee, the weather, he is talking about the performance of the French team. The use of internal attributions to why France performed the way they did does promote a sense of control that the team can work on areas to improve.

From research we know that the attributions and reasons you give to a performance can influence future performances, expectations and emotions. Being able to find the controllable and internal factors that contributed to France’s loss may be hurtful for the ego in the short term but can drastically better the team in the long term

What do you think about how Mbappe handled France’s loss to Spain?

“This gives me peace.”

That’s Haaland on chopping wood. Easy to laugh it off as the viking image. But listen to what he says it does for him.

Packed fixtures. Travel. Every touch analysed. You can’t be switched on 24/7 and still be sharp on a Saturday.

Your legs get a recovery plan. Your head needs one too.

Find your off switch this week:

1. Pick one thing you do with your hands, with no phone. Cooking, fishing, a long walk, anything.

2. Give it a fixed slot, like the day after a game

3. Do 30 minutes of it. No football talk, no clips.

Send this to the teammate who never switches off.

DM me FOCUS and I’ll send you a performance focus guide

With longer seasons becoming regular with more tournaments, tighter schedules and less time in the off season, players have more stress placed on them.

When I say stress, I don’t just mean physical stress, I also mean mental stress.

How are you expected to stay sharp, focused and energetic throughout an intense calendar?

Erling Haaland knows this and specifically wants to ensure he remains sharp.

Want to stay mentally sharp? Comment MAP below

Listen carefully to this if you’ve been wanting to perform at your best.

Here’s 2 reasons why
1. It makes you evaluate what you’re prioritising
2. The audio is difficult to hear so you have to listen closely 😛

If you’re a football player or been in high-level football before you know this well

There is a honeymoon period when there’s a new coach. But there’s also a period where you need to prove your worth.

Show that you deserve to be where you are because you know there are other people working to take your spot.

Kyllian knows this better than we do and it seems that Jose Mourinho’s style and personality is having a positive impact on the team.

Comment ‘HEAD’ if you’re trying the change how you think during changes like this
