Has Lucy impacted your life? Share your story and thoughts in the comments!

A few weeks ago, the FDA granted Breakthrough Therapy status to an L$D pill for depression, a major turnaround for one of the most controversial drugs in modern history.

In this video, I break down the full story, from Albert Hofmann’s lab in Switzerland to early psychiatric research, through the 1960s counterculture and the backlash that followed, to Nixon’s War on Drugs and the end of clinical research.

Along the way, Lucy also influenced a certain visionary who would later encourage the world to “Think Different.” 🍎

Fast forward to today: the pharma company Definium Therapeutics has reported promising results from a trial involving 150 people with depression, with benefits lasting up to 3 months after a single L$D treatment. These findings are still awaiting peer-reviewed publication.

Important: “Breakthrough Therapy” status does NOT mean L$D is approved. It means the FDA sees enough promise to work closely with the company and accelerate development and review.

Researchers at the D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR) in Brazil found that a compound extended the lifespan of tiny roundworms (C. elegans) by approximately 25%. But living longer wasn't the only interesting finding.

The worms also showed fewer signs of aging, including less buildup of lipofuscin, a pigment that accumulates inside cells as organisms get older.

What caught researchers' attention was how the worms responded to the treatment. Their bodies began showing changes similar to those seen during calorie restriction, one of the most widely studied ways to extend lifespan in animals.

They grew smaller, stored less fat, and produced fewer offspring. And here's what makes that interesting: they weren't simply eating less. The findings suggest the compound may have changed how their bodies handled energy and metabolism.

Researchers also found changes in serotonin-related signaling and TOR, a cellular pathway involved in growth, metabolism, and aging.

Short-term exposure increased protein production, while longer exposure slowed it down. That shift could help scientists better understand how cells adjust their activity over time and how those changes relate to longevity.

Of course, we're talking about tiny worms, not humans. There's still a long way to go before scientists can determine whether anything similar happens in people.

But the findings offer an interesting new direction for understanding how certain compounds might influence the biology of aging.

Growth rarely arrives gently. The biggest lessons often come disguised as the moments that shake us, confuse us, or crack us open.

Hard truths aren’t there to humble us, they’re there to free the parts of us that never got a chance to speak. The work isn’t just seeing clearly, it’s choosing to live differently with what we’ve seen.

Sometimes the most important transformations start where things stop feeling comfortable.

There’s a strange moment people sometimes describe where the line between “me” and everything else suddenly feels a lot thinner.

Researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, wanted to understand what might actually be happening in the brain when that boundary starts to fade.

For a long time, experiences like this were incredibly difficult to explain beyond the words of the person who experienced them.

What makes this study especially interesting is that the brain didn’t simply become more chaotic — patterns appeared within that chaos, changing with what people were doing and experiencing.

The deeper people went into feelings of unity and connection, the more clearly those patterns emerged.

Researchers describe the resulting feeling as “embeddedness”: less like you’re standing apart from the world and more like you’re actually part of it.

That raises a fascinating possibility... maybe our everyday feeling of being separate is something the brain is actively working to create and maintain.

For half of the participants, the experience became one of the most meaningful of their lives.

And we may finally be getting a clearer look at what happens when the walls around the “self” begin to soften.

Portland police are already largely taking a hands-off approach to personal use of certain naturally occurring substances. Now, some city councilors want to put that approach into city code.

Police told the council they don’t expect much to change day-to-day because personal use is already rarely an enforcement focus unless public safety or livability becomes an issue.

For supporters, putting it in writing is about making sure that approach continues even as city leadership changes.

Veterans, first responders and other community members testified in support, with several sharing deeply personal stories about trauma, depression and addiction.

The bigger conversation here is about whether private personal use should be something police spend their time and resources pursuing.

It’s an interesting shift to watch as cities continue figuring out where personal freedom, public safety and law enforcement should intersect.

Portland City Council is scheduled to vote September 30, and we linked the full proposed ordinance in our bio.

The FDA moves forward. The DEA moves backward. 🧭

Just one week after a historic FDA public hearing on the future of psychedel*c medicine, the DEA formally published an order to place obscure five tryptam*nes into Schedule I:

🔹 4-0H-D*PT
🔹 5-Me0-AMT
🔹 5-Me0-M*PT
🔹 5-Me0-DET
🔹 D*PT

The DEA’s own record doesn’t make its case:
📉 0 deaths from single-substance exposures across 65 cases over 18 years (2003–2021)
📉 518 law enforcement encounters cited, with no timeframe given
📉 HHS notes the FDA is “not aware of any diversion from research or legitimate manufacturing activities”

The collision: the FDA gave Reunion Neurosciences a Breakthrough Therapy designation for a 4-OH-DiPT candidate to treat postpartum depression. The DEA wants that same compound in Schedule I, legally defined as having “no currently accepted medical use.”

What happens when two closely related compounds seem to take consciousness in completely different directions?

Dimethyltryptamine is often associated with intensely detailed worlds and reported encounters with entities, while 5-MeO can move in the opposite direction, dissolving the usual sense of self, space, and time.

That contrast is part of what @christophertimmermann and PhD candidate @tommaso.barba are studying through brain activity, entropy, and changes in conscious experience.

Put them side by side, and you get a fascinating look at how the brain may build our everyday reality and what happens when that structure starts to change.

If you want to go much deeper, Dr. Timmermann is also leading Unlocking The Psychedelic Mind, a 10-week live online course exploring consciousness, perception, brain networks, neuroplasticity, meditation, creativity, and the sense of self.

The course includes 10 live sessions that blend neuroscience, philosophy, and discussion, with topics including REBUS, neural entropy, non-ordinary states, and the neuroscience of consciousness.

Dr. Timmermann brings more than 12 years of experience in consciousness science and now co-directs the UCL Centre for Consciousness Research.

It’s fully online, with recordings available if you can’t attend live, making it a rare chance to learn directly from one of the researchers helping push psychedelic neuroscience forward.

It likely won't shock anyone to learn that humans may have been intentionally altering their state of mind far earlier than we realized.

Researchers studying ancient remains on Sulawesi, Indonesia, found evidence that hunter-gatherers were regularly using betel nut as far back as 25,000 years ago.

Their teeth showed repeated wear, and chemical testing detected arecoline, the compound responsible for many of betel nut’s stimulating effects.

Researchers think it may also have been used for pain relief, especially because both individuals had serious dental problems.

What makes the story even more interesting is that betel nut is still widely used today, and regular use has been linked to cravings, withdrawal symptoms and difficulty stopping.

That gives this ancient discovery a surprisingly modern connection to the way humans continue to seek out substances that change how we feel.

The finding pushes habitual psychoactive substance use deep into the hunter-gatherer past, thousands of years before agriculture.

And it adds another piece to the much bigger story of how long humans have been intentionally altering consciousness.

Today, ibøga!ne is drawing growing international attention, but its story begins much earlier and much deeper in Central Africa.

Within Bwiti traditions, elders have passed down practices, stories and ways of understanding for generations.

For the communities connected to these traditions, this isn’t a new movement or emerging trend.

In Libreville, 77-year-old Tatayo has spent decades helping lead Ebando, a community that has welcomed people from Gabon and around the world.

Now his spiritual son, Mbilou, is beginning to build a new village on his own land with Tatayo’s blessing.

The goal is to create a living place where elders can teach, younger generations can learn, local people can work and Bwiti traditions can continue.

As international interest grows, the people and communities who have carried this knowledge deserve to be part of what comes next.

This project is about more than constructing buildings; it’s about giving that knowledge a place to live, grow and move into another generation.

Before I ever talked to Rico and Ty, I kept hearing their names.

Over and over, people I spoke with in the mycology world would tell me some version of the same thing:

“You should talk to Rico and do a post about him!”

By the time we finally connected, there was already this buildup around who they were and what they had created with Twin Flames Mycology.

Earlier this year, Rico went on Dennis Walker’s @mycopreneurofficial podcast and shared more of that story, including what his life looked like long before Twin Flames existed.

He talked about being homeless as a teenager, dealing with his mother’s declining health, and eventually finding a sense of direction that would shape the rest of his life.

What started as curiosity turned into years of learning, hands-on experience, and eventually something much bigger than he probably could have imagined back then.

Since then, I’ve gotten to know both Rico and Ty personally, and somewhere along the way they stopped feeling like people I was covering and simply became friends.

They’re genuine people who lead with their hearts, care deeply about the people around them, and put helping others first in a way that never feels forced or performative.

That comes through in the way they talk, the way they teach, and the community they’ve built around their work.

“It felt as if reality itself had briefly opened and shown me what lies beneath.”

I’m @tommaso.barba, a PhD researcher at Imperial College London, and I’ve spent the past several years studying mind-altering experiences, from their effects on the brain to their potential role in mental health.

I’ve co-authored over 15 scientific publications, with work published in journals including Nature Medicine, Scientific Reports and The Lancet’s eClinicalMedicine.

Last summer, after years of studying these experiences from the outside, I decided to take part in my first guided journey. I wanted to understand, from direct experience, something I had spent so long trying to understand scientifically.

One year later, these are some of the reflections I’m left with.

An important note on context: Experiences like mine are legally offered in some jurisdictions, including the Netherlands and Jamaica. But legal access is not the same as an approved medical treatment.

In the Netherlands, it is not an approved psychiatric treatment outside clinical research, while wellness retreats are not licensed to treat mental health disorders or psychological trauma.

This post is a reflection on a personal experience, not a recommendation or a treatment guide.
