New Mexico’s medical ps*locybin program is set to launch in December — a year ahead of schedule. But the people who fought to create it say the state’s draft rules could put it out of reach. Louisiana is paying for ibogaine clinical trials with opioid settlement money. The agreement governing that money requires a published accounting of where every dollar goes. The law creating the trials (Act 956) requires nothing about publishing what the trials find. “It is a careful law. That is the problem.” In the inaugural Regulatory Dispatch from Psychedel*c State(s) of America, epidemiologist and regulatory scientist Odette Alina Hauke, M.S., traces how the statute was written, and where results reporting could still be required before the first progress reports arrive in January 2027. A few weeks ago, the FDA granted Breakthrough Therapy status to an L$D pill for depression, a major turnaround for one of the most controversial drugs in modern history. In this video, I break down the full story, from Albert Hofmann’s lab in Switzerland to early psychiatric research, through the 1960s counterculture and the backlash that followed, to Nixon’s War on Drugs and the end of clinical research. Along the way, Lucy also influenced a certain visionary who would later encourage the world to “Think Different.” 🍎 Fast forward to today: the pharma company Definium Therapeutics has reported promising results from a trial involving 150 people with depression, with benefits lasting up to 3 months after a single L$D treatment. These findings are still awaiting peer-reviewed publication. Important: “Breakthrough Therapy” status does NOT mean L$D is approved. It means the FDA sees enough promise to work closely with the company and accelerate development and review. 🍄 A significant step for psilocybin research in Canada. Health Canada has authorized Optimi Health to proceed with a Phase 2 clinical trial studying naturally derived psilocybin for major depressive disorder. The trial is expected to involve up to 200 participants across Canada, with the first dosing anticipated in 2027. Why is this important? 🌱 It brings natural, mushroom-derived psilocybin further into regulated clinical research. 🔬 It may contribute valuable evidence around safety and therapeutic outcomes. ⚖️ And importantly, clinical trial authorization is not the same as approval for general medical use. As psychedelic research continues to evolve, conversations around evidence, safety, access, regulation, and the role of natural medicines become increasingly important.
