We are parents, educators, students, and community members fighting for honest, equitable, and fully funded public schools!
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
On MLK Day, we honor a legacy rooted in justice, equality, and the belief that every child deserves opportunity. Dr. King spoke often about the power of education, not just as a pathway to individual success, but as a tool to build a stronger, more united democracy.

Today, that legacy is under attack.

This MLK Day, watch and share this short video with Glenn Harris, President of @raceforward, explaining exactly why public schools are such a threat to the anti-democratic movement that has taken over our country.

These attacks aren’t inevitable or unstoppable, let’s start treating them as something we can defeat together. by @publicschoolstrong

Thanks @chalkbeatorg Chicago for including us in the discussion about whether Illinois should opt into the new federal school voucher program. Without a doubt, Gov. Pritzker should keep Illinois out of this program!

We released a report last week with the @institute.for.the.public.good explaining why this Trump administration initiative won’t and can’t be a meaningful source of new revenue for most public schools: www.publicgoodpolicy.org/briefs/federal-voucher-program link on our @il_fps bio Linktree.

We looked at demographic and budget data from three IL school districts representing a range of socioeconomic and geographic contexts across the state, New Trier, Springfield and Beardstown, and showed how the federal vouchers are highly unlikely to result in a net gain of funds for underresourced districts. Instead, at best, they’ll just increase existing inequity of resources within our public school system.

Public schools lose funds under all voucher programs, and only wealthy communities who already have well-funded schools may possibly eke out some extra dollars with federal vouchers.

We say "possibly" because the feds are promising more detailed guidance on what educational expenses will qualify to come, and it’s possible they’ll try to constrain how this program can cover the expenses of public school students even further.

Governor Pritzker must make a decision before January about whether Illinois should participate in the new federal school voucher program.

Please take a minute to call and urge him to keep Illinois out of this harmful program! Phone numbers: 217-782-6830 ✶ 217-782-6831 ✶ 312-814-2121 ✶ 312-814-2122 by @publicschoolstrong

Every Chicago Public Schools student, with a Google-issued school account, has a homework machine at their fingertips.

Unlike the 50s sci-fi character, Danny Dunn, who had to actually read, learn, and understand the material to program his homework machine, the Google search function inside CPS school accounts generates AI summaries which provide instant answers to homework and classwork tasks. And as the WSJ reported last month, it’s had a negative impact in schools even when students have no other access to Gemini.

We’re concerned because providing kids with instantaneous access to answers short-circuits the valuable, strenuous tasks of thinking, discovering and creating—the core experiences of the learning process.

So, what can parents and caregivers do? Well, one step you can take is to refuse genAI products for your child. We’ve created a How To Refuse GenAI guide to get started: bit.ly/refuse_genai - link on our @il_fps bio Linktree.

Note that CPS’ own AI Guidebook supports this so that “your child’s educational experience aligns with your family’s values and preferences.“ So, if you’re not keen on homework machines, OPT OUT!

Full steam ahead for the bots? Not on our watch!

Families are right to be wary of genAI use in schools. There is growing evidence that genAI use harms student learning. It also poses major risks to the environment, to the mental health of children and adults and to the security of computer systems.

And genAI companies profit unethically and possibly illegally from the input datasets that their products’ trained on, the bulk of which is made up of the work of creative artists of all kinds.

Other genAI training data sources include information generated by product users, and in the case of ed tech, that means data from children and young people in schools.

In early September, the two largest public school districts in the US, New York City and Los Angeles, took proactive, protective measures against the harms of genAI in schools.

But here in Chicago, we’re still waiting for our school leaders to step up!

So, what can parents and caregivers do in the meantime?

First, contact your school board member and ask them for a moratorium like NYC and LA! Find them here: www.cps.edu/about/chicago-board-of-education/member-map

Next, you can refuse genAI products for your child. Note that CPS’ own AI Guidebook supports this so that “your child’s educational experience aligns with your family’s values and preferences.“

See our new How To Refuse GenAI guide on our website: It has sample language you can use to notify your child’s school about your refusal: https://www.ilfps.org/refuse_genai - link on our @il_fps linktree
