These Chicago Board of Education candidates committed to putting thoughtful, protective policy in place that protects students' educational experience and personal data.

We asked everyone running for school board in Chicago to commit to the Pledge to Protect Human-Centered Education because we urgently need board members who will take proactive, protective measures against the harms of overuse and misuse of ed tech in Chicago Public Schools.

The Pledge’s four policy actions will lay the foundation for addressing the harm that overuse and misuse of technology in CPS is causing:
1) Enact a three-year moratorium on generative AI use
2) Appoint a Chief Privacy Officer
3) Limit screen time in all grades
4) Prohibit collection of biometric information

Chicago in-person early voting is underway, and Election Day is November 3rd. Find out more about the Pledge, and please spread the word: https://humancenteredcps.com or in our @il_fps linktree in our bio

Ohio’s school funding formula has had a profound impact on our urban public schools.

Even if you don’t care about our urban public schools, you should understand that this funding system is one reason your property taxes are so high.

The state determines how much it believes each school district can raise locally, then subtracts that amount from the state’s share of basic education funding.

In other words, the state assumes local taxpayers can shoulder a certain financial burden, reduces its own contribution accordingly, and leaves school districts increasingly dependent on local property taxes to make up the difference.

Every Chicago Public Schools student, with a Google-issued school account, has a homework machine at their fingertips.

Unlike the 50s sci-fi character, Danny Dunn, who had to actually read, learn, and understand the material to program his homework machine, the Google search function inside CPS school accounts generates AI summaries which provide instant answers to homework and classwork tasks. And as the WSJ reported last month, it’s had a negative impact in schools even when students have no other access to Gemini.

We’re concerned because providing kids with instantaneous access to answers short-circuits the valuable, strenuous tasks of thinking, discovering and creating—the core experiences of the learning process.

So, what can parents and caregivers do? Well, one step you can take is to refuse genAI products for your child. We’ve created a How To Refuse GenAI guide to get started: bit.ly/refuse_genai - link on our @il_fps bio Linktree.

Note that CPS’ own AI Guidebook supports this so that “your child’s educational experience aligns with your family’s values and preferences.“ So, if you’re not keen on homework machines, OPT OUT!

Governor Pritzker, OPT OUT of the federal school voucher program!

Today, more than three dozen state and local civil rights, good government, family, labor, community and faith-based organizations in Illinois issued a joint statement, urging Governor Pritzker to keep Illinois out of the new federal program, in response to the US Department of Treasury’s October 1st release of temporary and proposed regulations to implement the program.

The regulations make clear that participating in this program will hurt educational equity in Illinois and will not benefit public schools. The state will have little ability to regulate the program to prohibit discrimination or prevent fraud, waste and abuse. Federal voucher dollars will primarily subsidize families who already pay for private school. Dollars that do go to public school students in underresourced districts will not offset losses to their school districts due to enrollment decreases.

Full statement: www.ilfps.org/statement_on_federal_voucher_regulation_release – link on @il_fps bio Linktree

Do you agree? Take a minute and send a letter to Gov. Pritzker: bit.ly/no_vouchers_letters
