Introducing Sung Ho Choi @pubrivate, an artist featured in the AKAA Archive.

Sung Ho Choi’s practice explores the complexities of bicultural identity, shaped by his experience of emigrating from Korea to the United States. His work reflects on the condition of being “the other,” examining the tensions, contrasts, and layered realities of existing as a minority within a dominant culture. Working across themes and mediums, Choi investigates how cultural encounters—at times conflicting, destructive, and healing—generate patterns that echo natural cycles and energetic systems.

Through his process, Choi approaches art-making as a form of inquiry: collecting and translating these patterns into visual and conceptual systems of meaning. His work seeks moments of transformation within these dynamics, drawing on an almost alchemical sensibility to reveal connections between cultural experience and broader universal structures.

Ultimately, Choi’s artistic practice centers on the question of how to articulate contrasting identities within an increasingly multicultural society, and how such experiences might be understood in universal terms.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Sungho Choi

Sungho Choi’s works explore the intersections of culture, identity, and societal issues, drawing from his personal experiences as a Korean immigrant in America.

✨ Korean Roulette ✨
A rotating fan with bloody gloves hovering over Korean grocery items symbolizes the precarious gamble of the American Dream. Referencing 1990s tensions between Korean shopkeepers and Black communities, this piece highlights cultural and racial ruptures while reflecting on the cycles of conflict and healing.

✨ God Bless America? ✨
Crafted with lottery tickets, this work questions the ideals of the American Dream. The fragile balance between aspiration and reality is boldly portrayed, urging viewers to reflect on the role of chance and inequality in society.
