Did you think we had gone...without finishing this series. No, we didn't, we've always been here. We are gonna finish what we started. Looking to find, meet and capture as many, if not all, Punks and Goths. If you are interested and know others please DM me and share. This is for people from Birmingham or people from the Birmingham scene. by @punksandgoths

Since 2017, after engaging in a conversation with a co-worker who is a member of longtime Birmingham punk band The Accused – @rizalidar has been travelling to various bars and music venues in Birmingham and its surrounding areas with his camera, meeting with and making pictures of those involved in the local punk and goth scenes.

Featuring pit action at gigs and warm portraits of the bands and fans, his photographs are now presented in his ongoing online series @punksandgoths.

“I think the scene is fantastic here. It’s really good, really diverse,” Ali tells Huck. “And I kid you not, every single goth and every single punk have been some of the nicest people that you can ever imagine. There’s never any egos, there’s never been any in-fighting – it’s a very close, tight-knit community.”

With his subjects often smiling at the camera, all dramatic make-up, back-combed hair and battle jackets, Ali’s series shines a human light on subcultures that have been historically maligned by mainstream society.

“I think all subcultures have a bad press image – like rap and hip hop, punks and goths, and especially skinheads. A lot of this comes from the fact that they were people who early on rebelled against the norms and people couldn’t accept that at the time. Obviously you see punks portrayed as loud mouth troublemakers and goths as these weird reclusive types, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Every single person I’ve met, all of them have normal day-to-day jobs, and this is just their outlet. And I think that’s fantastic, personally.”

Punks and Goths is now international thanks to @huckmagazine for their interview about my series. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to share my series with a wider audience.

I spent the day with @magnatascourtband documenting them. Make sure you check them out. This band has that vibe about them. Raw and to the point and they are absolutely down to earth also.

"It wasn’t until one day in my final year of secondary school when my dad played a Madness album in the car that I really began to explore the music that would shape my identity. I know, not very punk. For some reason i’d always felt like I had to hide whatever music I was listening to from people, I felt really awkward telling people what music I was into, but think it was because I was already a very shy person. I started getting into bands like The Specials, X-Ray Spex and The Clash. I loved how they played, how they dressed, and what they stood for, and later explored the punk and new wave genre extensively, I still am. The music was so different to anything I was used to, non of mates were listening to it, I’d found something so special and unique, and I had to be part of it. If it wasn’t for that one day, I wouldn’t have been in this band, I wouldn’t have had these amazing mates, and I wouldn’t have looked so cool"

"We have had an amazing response in such little time. I think because there are so little all female, and even female fronted bands around at the moment, it’s something fresh. We have been able to meet lots of people who like our music, whether that be another band, or just people into punk"

"My name is Tilly, and I’ve been playing the drums for a really long time…although I did try to play the piano for a couple years, but I didn’t even get past the foundation level! I was very lucky to be asked by my mate Keeley, the lead singer, to join her new all girl band, Magnatas Court, who needed a new drummer. I saw them perform their first gig a couple weeks prior to this, and I thought they were the most unique band around. It’s been around 5 months now, and I don’t think I’ve laughed and had this much fun before. I love the songs we make together, and we’re always thinking of these new and unusual musical influences we could incorporate into our next song"

"Music has helped me broaden my horizons and help me get on the path to my goals in life. My hopes for the future of the band is to continue being us, continue making music that speaks to us and to share our love of music as much as possible with the goth and punk community"
