POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A follow-up to our recent Lafayette post.

Thanks to Carolyn Patricia for sending over these photographs of the Sex Pistols at Club Lafayette in Wolverhampton on 21 December 1977.

The band were in the middle of the wonderfully titled Never Mind the Bans Tour, with local punk favourites Satan’s Rats supporting. Just four days before Christmas, the Lafayette must have felt about as festive as a small riot in a tinsel factory.

These images were taken by Japanese photographer Toshi Yajima and later appeared in his book London Rhapsody. They capture the band at that strange moment when punk had gone from underground nuisance to full-blown national panic.

It is still remarkable to think that the Sex Pistols played Wolverhampton at all and that a venue on Thornley Street hosted nights like this.

Were you there that night? Does anyone remember Satan’s Rats, or remember the atmosphere at the Lafayette?

I tend to always carry a camera when I am out and this was just one of those occasions. I always photograph people I find interesting and these lads were there in Dudley.

I’d just come up from Wolverhampton Street and I saw the lads across the way there… enjoying the attention they were drawing from people. So I approached them and had a little chat and all that and they agreed to pose just for a couple of photographs.

Sad thing is I was on the end of a roll of film. I just managed to get one and a half frames, but they were just great you know? Having a bit of a laugh and all the rest of it.
And I asked one of the lads to give me a bit of a grimace and he stuck his tongue out and ‘click’ that was it - end of the film, I couldn’t do anymore.

I have no problem communicating with people. Also I was lecturing in photography so I was used to talking to people.
The punks of course; people tend to think well ‘aggression’. They wren’t aggressive at all, they were just youngsters having a great day out, enjoying the attention and it was just a sign of a particular time.
They were a great bunch of lads. That was a long time ago. I think it was 1980 - it was just at the end of the Punk era.

Since 2017, after engaging in a conversation with a co-worker who is a member of longtime Birmingham punk band The Accused – @rizalidar has been travelling to various bars and music venues in Birmingham and its surrounding areas with his camera, meeting with and making pictures of those involved in the local punk and goth scenes.

Featuring pit action at gigs and warm portraits of the bands and fans, his photographs are now presented in his ongoing online series @punksandgoths.

“I think the scene is fantastic here. It’s really good, really diverse,” Ali tells Huck. “And I kid you not, every single goth and every single punk have been some of the nicest people that you can ever imagine. There’s never any egos, there’s never been any in-fighting – it’s a very close, tight-knit community.”

With his subjects often smiling at the camera, all dramatic make-up, back-combed hair and battle jackets, Ali’s series shines a human light on subcultures that have been historically maligned by mainstream society.

“I think all subcultures have a bad press image – like rap and hip hop, punks and goths, and especially skinheads. A lot of this comes from the fact that they were people who early on rebelled against the norms and people couldn’t accept that at the time. Obviously you see punks portrayed as loud mouth troublemakers and goths as these weird reclusive types, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Every single person I’ve met, all of them have normal day-to-day jobs, and this is just their outlet. And I think that’s fantastic, personally.”
