If you are a pup who still gets nervous about people knowing, I think I understand something about you.

You’re not ashamed because this is wrong.

You’re scared because at some point you learned that the softer, stranger, more playful parts of you had to be hidden.

So now even joy can feel dangerous.

But there is nothing embarrassing about wanting a place where you can be affectionate without overexplaining it.

There is nothing pathetic about wanting to be cared for.

There is nothing wrong with finding a version of yourself that feels more honest, even if it looks a little weird from the outside.

There’s a bunch of times I wish the pup Community was more popular in that people vilified it less. But in a lot of ways, I think because our community is so misunderstood it’s fostered the sense of openness and kindness. That other parts of the Gay community does not have. It has become a refuge for the rejects and weirdos and that is massively what I love about our community we create a home for the people that others refused.

It can take time to understand yourself to stop allowing yourself to be controlled by shame. I think we as gay men understand that better than almost any other group planet.

I actually originally came out because of a furry comic that I had seen and in the relationship between the two male characters, I thought was so endearing and sweet and something in me just said I wanna share this kind of connection with another man.

The first time I saw a pup was at a gay bar two years after I had come out I was immediately interested by it and didn’t say anything about it to anyone for over a decade.

I have spent many years feeling like I didn’t belong or have a home within the gay community. Little did I know that dressing up like a dog and being cute and affectionate and loving towards people was the missing piece to me being seen.

And in hindsight, it makes perfect sense if you were not fully showing up, if your shame about who you are is stopping you from fully showing yourself. How can anyone ever fully see you?

I think a lot of gay men show up aggressively and angrily in their day-to-day lives they interact with the world in a “I don’t give a fuck what you think about me” kind of attitude.

This is not what I want for my life. I have spent so many years being angry. I want to show up with a “this is my life, this is all of me, I love who I am, who I was, and who I’m becoming and if you don’t like that, if you think that’s weird, that’s OK”
