Reception Wednesday, 10/7 at 6 pm! 🎉

Good Question, an exhibition at The Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery, celebrates the vibrant life of the Painting & Drawing Department at SUNY Purchase in 2026. The exhibition features paintings and drawings by sixteen full-time and part-time faculty members whose teaching experience in the School of Art+Design ranges from twenty years to one semester. The work of these artists shows decades of dedicated experimentation, curiosity, and even bewilderment. When asked to share some “unknowns” they grapple with in their studio practice, they offered some good questions.

From which point do you find the center?
Where does the river begin?
What does the reality of our flux state look like?
Is it in here or out there?

What is a good question? Perhaps it is one born of curiosity, one that mediates inner and outer worlds, one that remains open-ended and leads to deeper inquiry. Wednesday! Cullen Washington, Jr. joins us for our Visiting Artist Lecture Series: September 23, at 5pm in the Perception Lab (VA 1016) @cullenwashingtonjr

Cullen Washington, Jr. is an African American abstract painter. He is a native of Louisiana. Washington is the inaugural recipient of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation and the International Studio and Curatorial Program Residency, a Joan Mitchell Grant awardee and participant of the Joan Mitchell Foundation residency in New Orleans, LA. He has been an artist in residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem, Yaddo and The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Washington’s work is included in the MET collection of prints and drawings, the Pamela Joyner Giuffrida Collection and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Washington has shown at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the University of Michigan Museum of Art (solo) and the Queens Museum. Washington’s work has been reviewed in NKA Journal of Contemporary African Art, Art:21 Blog, The New York Times, and The International Review of African American Art. Washington lives and works in Queens, NY.

Congratulations to our very own alum, Lucia Hierro ‘10, whose work is now on view in “Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now” at the Guggenheim Museum in New York through January 10th, 2027.

A graduate of our School of Art & Design, Hierro creates bold, large-scale works inspired by everyday objects, exploring identity, community, labor, and the cultural experiences of the Dominican diaspora.

We’re proud to see Lucia’s work featured alongside some of the most influential names in modern and contemporary art. Congratulations on this incredible achievement!
