Andrew Soboleski knew Purdue University would provide problem-solving skills and coursework to challenge him.

But that wasn’t why he chose #PurdueEngineering.

Soboleski, from Greenwood, Indiana, wanted an education that valued real-world experience.

“I’ve been encouraged to explore engineering beyond my comfort zone, giving me opportunities to gain valuable industry experience and develop skills that simply can’t be learned in a lecture hall,” said Soboleski, the latest to be featured in “Faces of Purdue Engineering.”

Soboleski, a junior studying civil engineering, already has completed two internships, leveraging career fairs, company tabling events and industry speaker events. Those have transformed how he learns, seeing concepts transferred from the classroom into the workplace from a design and construction perspective.

Multiple site visits and field trips — many through @purduecce, Civil Engineering Student Advisory Council or Kiewit Scholars — have been transformative, too. Seeing the active construction site of 400 Lake Shore, a new skyscraper in Chicago, or the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, has given Soboleski a “real-world lens on what we learn in class.”

Everything Soboleski envisioned when enrolling in West Lafayette — and has worked to cultivate since.

“I wanted to learn in an environment that emphasizes meaningful connections between students and faculty,” he said. “The people I’ve surrounded myself with at Purdue have become more than just classmates and professors. Instead, they’ve become mentors, leaders and friends who continuously drive me to be the best version of myself.”

That’s part of the messaging Soboleski offers to students considering applying to Purdue. The other: Don’t be afraid to explore all areas of #engineering.

“As a Purdue Engineer, your passion is one of your greatest strengths, so finding a field that allows you to grow and make an impact on those around you is an important step toward success,” he said. “Being involved on campus, asking questions and remaining open to new experiences will allow you to make the most of your time at Purdue while securing a world-class engineering education.” Man in neon vest with crossed arms, background arch reads in black, “Civil engineering.” by @purdueundergradengineers

A friend planted the seed.

When New Jersey native Harsh Magdum was a senior in high school applying to colleges, he knew #engineering was the path. Turned out, Magdum had an embedded resource at one of the best places to study the field: #PurdueUniversity.

Magdum soaked up all his friend’s insider infoabout one of the top-ranked #engineering colleges for undergrad (No. 8 in the latest @usnwr report).

Magdum was impressed with the opportunities #Purdue offered, the hands-on experiences, the comprehensive curriculum, the emphasis on career preparedness.

And, especially, the chance to major in environmental and ecological engineering. Magdum had been interested in climate change throughout middle and high school, and environmental science was his favorite high school class.

Magdum was ready to be challenged, which influenced applying to the Honors College. That proved to be a transformative experience as a first-year engineering student last year.

“The Engineering Honors Program was great at introducing me to real engineering concepts and ideas,” Magdum said. “During the courses ENGR 161 and 162, we were tasked with group projects that involved almost every step of the engineering process including initial design, modeling and building, programming, research, final demonstrations and performance, and presentations.

“This course was also an amazing introduction to college coursework as a whole. While the course was quite rigorous, I was able to learn how to approach college-level assignments and how to study for difficult exams.”

That early experience has boosted the sophomore’s confidence. And with two-plus more years in West Lafayette, he’ll continue to be equipped, deepen skills and build networks that will help him succeed beyond Purdue.

“I have always wanted to make a lasting positive impact with the work that I accomplish, and problem-solving and critical thinking skills that come with an engineering degree will prepare me for handling real-world issues,” said Magdum, an ambassador for the college. “Helping communities through my work is my main goal, and an engineering degree will give me the perfect opportunity to accomplish it.” Man standing with leafy green background, wearing black shirt with gold “Purdue” print. by @purdueundergradengineers
