This is 46. When I was eight years old, my dad started training me for cycling. We would go for three and four hour long rides, building up endurance for a 100K scheduled for shortly after my ninth birthday. But, as most eight year olds go, I had a penchant for spinning really fast, stopping, spinning really fast again, stopping again - effectively playing tortoise and the hare with my dad, and losing out to his patient tortoise.

I remember vividly at one point we were going up a long hill, and I was not making it very far between hare-breaks. He came up to me, and said, “Let’s see who can go the slowest, while still pedaling, and not falling over!” He made it a game to keep going. I tried pedaling so slowly that I almost fell, but instead kept rolling, and couldn’t help but giggle. My dad was laughing too, inching his way up the hill.

Eventually we made our way to the top, but we never stopped pedaling the rest of the way.

Not only did he meet me where I was struggling, he made it fun, and he played along, too. Plus, he showed me the joy of going slowly, and how - with someone else beside you - it can sometimes be even more fun than racing ahead to get to the next respite.

This is my first birthday without my dad. But it may also be the first birthday where I really learned the lesson he taught me that day. Another year, and I didn’t reach the top of the hill (of business, of parenting, of relationships, of poker, or anything else in life). But I’m not trying to finish climbing it, anyway! I’m trying to enjoy myself along the way, go as slowly as I can, without falling over, and laugh as much as possible, with the people I love beside me. Or, as others have put it: it’s about the journey, not the destination.

It is with deep love that we share the passing of our father, Terrence “Terry” Vaughn.

On August 9th, Terry passed away peacefully at his home in Fort Bragg, California, from heart failure.

For more than 45 years, he called the Mendocino Coast home. During that time, he touched countless lives—whether through his work in phone service, his creation of Mendocino TV, his love of cycling, or his constant enthusiasm for community events.

A night out in Vegas. Two amazing art galleries with Picasso, Dali, Warhol, Chagall. Rembrandt, etc. The Wynn gardens. Dinner with friends at the Yardhouse. Michael Jackson “One” by @cirquedusoleil Walking the strip from middle to the bottom and back (21K steps!) Watching the final 12 down to 10 players at the WSOP Main Event final table.
