My inner dork is kinda geeking out. 🤓 I’ll be at #AWP24 in Kansas City in 2 weeks, and it’s my first time as a panel guest! From my newest piece published this week on @lavenderbonesmagazine “the chorus and the refrain”: I test my memory every few days to see if I can still recall the sound of your voice. Some days I can conjure you up, but today I can’t hear you at all. Not your laugh, or the way you called my name, or even the way you started every voicemail you ever left me: Hola, Chula.

The whole day has passed without any recollection of your voice, but I keep testing again, like my tongue wandering mindlessly to the gap of a freshly pulled tooth. No, still nothing there. Then, as I chop vegetables for dinner in the kitchen, I hear the first four bars of Louis Prima’s “Oh Marie” on KJAZ, your favorite radio station. I freeze in place, I can’t believe my luck, I run to the stereo and turn the volume knob all the way up.

I’m so very excited to announce that a micro essay I wrote about my abuela has been accepted for publication in the Nonwhite and Woman anthology by @woodhallpress coming out in the fall of 2022! Aurora Zazueta Chagollan was a proud and formidable matriarch, and I’m thrilled to honor her legacy with my piece. So grateful to @darienhsugee and the work we did together in her incredible @hugohouse class, Writing About the Women in Your Family, where this piece was born. What does “happy” look like to you? For me, it’s often getting out my paints and seeing what emerges. I’m starting a new book project this week about social emotional learning, and I’d love to hear from my teacher and parent friends what it looks and feels like to talk to your kids about emotions.
