Solo performance—why do it? What can it do that few other forms can? Join us for our next in-person class Writing for the Solo Performer with McKnight Fellow in Playwriting MK Tuomanen!

Students will examine different works of solo performance and apply the principles they encounter therein to their own work. They will confront themselves playfully, writing from a place of honesty and vulnerability that celebrates experimentation and encourages bold artistic gestures.

Plus, students will leave the class having written the beginnings of several options for a one-act performance, any of which could be expanded into a full draft!

Class starts October 26

This one’s for the writer-performers!

Under instructor MK’s guidance, together students will consider the questions of how to cast the audience, how trustworthy to make the narrator(s), how poetry, character and rhythm can be helpful tools, as well as gauging the writer’s fluctuating distance to the material and the listener as the story unfolds.

Leave the class with several written options for a one-act performance, any of which could be expanded into a full draft of a solo show.

Class starts October 26.

About Ruben Santiago-Hudson:

In addition to his Tony-winning performance in August Wilson's SEVEN GUITARS, Ruben will direct a revival of the play at Lincoln Center Theater this fall. He received a Tony nomination for his performance in the Broadway revival of Wilson's JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE, directed the Tony-winning Broadway revival of Wilson's JITNEY, and adapted MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM for Netflix.

Ruben's other directing credits include the world premieres of John Leguizamo's THE OTHER AMERICANS and John Kani's KUNENE AND THE KING, along with the Tony-nominated SKELETON CREW. His own play LACKAWANNA BLUES, which he wrote, directed, and starred in, made him the only person in Broadway history to do all three; its HBO adaptation won numerous awards. by @pwcenter

Playwrights’ Center is proud to provide this valuable artistic support and development resources for theaters across the country to develop and refine new work for their stages.

Reserve your spot at the link in our bio!

About the play:

M-A-C-N-O-L-I-A
by A. Van Jordan
adapted by abigail jean-baptiste
dramaturgy by Sam Morreale

They say MacNolia Cox almost won The National Spelling Bee in 1936. They say this 13-year-old black girl from Akron, Ohio didn’t stand a chance in a segregated D.C. They say she died September 12th 1976, left discouraged and unmotivated by her loss. But what would she have to say about her own life and legacy? An ensemble of Black women and femmes gathers to imagine MacNolia’s perspective. A collaging of the award winning poetry collection by A. Van Jordan, this new play explores how we can be ready to spell our futures on our own terms. by @pwcenter
