So excited that I got to be a part of the grand opening of the new @pwcenter and welcome them to District 3! For nearly five decades, the Playwrights' Center has stood as a beacon for storytelling and artistic development, not only here in MN but across the country. It's a space where bold ideas are nurtured, where playwrights at every stage of their career are supported with resources and residency to develop their work. Can't wait to see what comes out of this space for the next five decades!

Supporting Roles.
weathering steel; rolled mirror-polished stainless steel; painted aluminum, custom marquee light fixtures.

Just installed this at the new Playwrights Center building in St.Paul. The Playwrights Center supports the creation of new work by playwrights at all levels of expertise, from all around the world by giving authors the freedom to explore and experiment.

This piece is about the construction of new creative work- the scaffolding that supports the sweeping arcs of stories, imagined and lived, the tangents that spin off in unexpected directions, the unfinished, open-ended expanse of possibilities, and the drama of the stage.

The sculpture was inspired by the props of stagecraft: lighting, scaffolds, supports- the makeshift physical elements that help bring the magic of a drama to life- and the stories of the playwrights.

In creating the artwork, I hosted an engagement with an enthusiastic group of aspiring playwrights who were asked to record a particular story from their own lives or one of their scripts, on an arc of aluminum that we attached to a wooden scaffold to mimic the sculpture, and shared then shared stories.

While the sculpture required the precision of thousandths of inches in design and fabrication, it is intended to evoke an unfinished, improvised set of possibilities only partially polished.

Some photos of the engagement a year ago, and the sculpture on a grey day after installation.

Spent a few days in Minnesota @pwcenter for my second year as a Core Writer, and my second year workshopping my play ANONYMOUS SKIN. This time we were able to present a live reading of the show, both for our personal process and for @falloffreedom. Like last year, a crazy amount of work was done, made evident by my lack of photos. Whenever I go somewhere it’s about leaving with family, not just collaborators. Love to everyone at @pwcenter, our cast, and my director @matthewjohnsonharris who has been with this show since I finished the first draft nearly three years ago. See you next year ✌🏾
