Celebrating 10 years of Barangaroo Reserve!

Named for an influential Aboriginal woman of pre-colonial Sydney, Barangaroo is a globally-significant, 22-hectare waterfront renewal project that redefines Sydney Harbor. Barangaroo Reserve was the first phase in a 3-district master plan. The project re-created a "Club Cape" headland by transforming a concrete container port into a park with over 75,000 plantings native to the region. Guided by historical maps and paintings, the design of the headland includes a foreshore of 10,000 sandstone blocks excavated directly from the site. Walking and bicycle pathways separated by the "1836 Wall" symbolically mark the original pre-colonial shoreline. A "One Planet Living" project, Barangaroo Reserve reused and recycled all existing materials onsite for the headland. Hidden beneath the new headland, the Cutaway is a massive void formed through sandstone excavation to host art exhibits, performances, or a future Aboriginal Cultural Center. Barangaroo Reserve transforms a huge expanse of empty concrete into usable space for both people and animals on land and in water, marking the transformation of an industrial site into a modern reinvention of its more sustainable past. by @pwpla

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, QCP entered the design conversation, becoming more involved with landscape architects and their projects. Going beyond simply supplying objects, we started thinking more critically about helping designers determine how those objects could serve a larger idea. In 1995, we worked with Peter Walker and Partners, now PWP Landscape Architecture (@pwpla), on Library Walk at UC San Diego. The project marked an important shift toward design-led, project-specific work.

My name is Jack Taks, and I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Florida.
If someone would have told me at the start of this year that I would be living in California, with the opportunity to design in active projects, meet professionals both in and out of the field, indulge in excursions, while simultaneously bonding with great companions, I would have not believe this to be true and respond simply with "that sounds like the dream". If this hypothetical situation were to really have happened, I would have been the fool as I reflect upon this amazing summer.
Here are a few photos, mementos and drawings of moments from the past few months which gave definition to my experiences at PWP and California.
Thank you @pwp and my fellow interns for a fantastic experience. by @pwpla

Hi! This is Dayu, and I’m a summer intern beltfish.
I’m originally from the east coast of China. I swam all the way from Harvard GSD on the East Coast to PWP on the West Coast. Every day, I ride through the cool morning fog to the office, where I’ve met many cute furry friends, including Bootsie, Joji, Jax and Tilly. PWP truly lives up to its “People Working with Pets” culture!
As interns, we became part of many aspects of life at the office and gained firsthand experience of the profession. We visited Grandpa Peter’s art studio, followed our lovely colleagues into fields, explored the Bay Area’s vibrant urban landscapes, and learned from many inspiring projects.
Together with my sketching buddy Jack, who is from Florida, we recorded our visits to factories and field trips, as well as moments from everyday life—such as having lunch together under the yellow umbrella.
This summer, I was responsible for designing a children’s park in India. From a fish’s perspective, I helped create playful experiences inspired by India unique wildlife, including my friend pink river dolphin, scaly pangolin, and many others. Each animal inspires a different way of climbing, balancing, crawling, or exploring, and I hope the children will enjoy discovering them through play and interaction.
For me, swimming through California’s cool weather, bright sunshine, and colorful activities has made this truly wonderful and fulfilling summer. by @pwpla
