HAMLET/HORATIO

A camera stands alone in a circle of light on a black sound stage. Hamlet is already dead. Everything you are about to watch happens inside the last second he is awake.

Paul Warner’s feature never pretends the equipment is not there. The operator stays in frame. So does the viewfinder, timecode running, battery at thirty-two percent. The rest of the company stands in black at the edge of the light, waiting to be called in, less a court than a crew. Horatio promised a dying friend he would tell the story. Here he keeps it by picking up a camera and directing the film you are watching.

The play runs plain. Only enough set to suggest a room. Claudius in a doorway, Hamlet in a leather jacket, Ophelia blown to white until the frame almost loses her.

Three hundred thousand dollars. An ARRI Alexa Mini, a black stage, a company of actors and a hundred minutes of Shakespeare.

The build took twenty years. David Wenzel played Hamlet off-Broadway in 2000, developed the Horatio idea with writer David Vando, and staged it eight times before deciding it was a film. Award Winner at FFTG Awards Film Fest 2020, in seven categories.

Six years on it is still streaming, still free, still up.
Horatio’s whole job was to outlive the story. So far the film has done it for him.

Where films and filmmakers live on.

So the fascist tyrant had the T removed from the Stonewall National Monument (https://abcnews.go.com/US/transgender-references-removed-stonewall-national-monument-website/story?id=118804553#:~:text=The%20National%20Park%20Service%20eliminated,has%20been%20changed%20to%20LGB). The T (transgender, transexual, transvestite, etc...) were and still are an integral part of our civil rights. The resistance and fight against the cops in June 1969 was initiated by a trans person. These people will NOT BE ERASED. The LGBTQ community WILL NOT BE ERASED. Show your support. Give to the local ACLU or LGBTQ org and have a voice that states we are all human and deserve dignity, happiness and the right to live free from fear and oppression.
