What happens between having an idea for a book and seeing your name on high-street shelves? And once you get there, how do you sustain a career?

In this event, novelists Costanza Casati (Clytemnestra, Babylonia) and Paddy Crewe (My Name is Yip, True Love) share an open, behind-the-scenes perspective on being a writer today. Costanza and Paddy will discuss their contrasting creative journeys, their writing habits, and the honest truths about building a life in fiction. They’ll dive into the practical realities of the industry, the discipline needed to finish a manuscript, the road to securing representation and a book deal, and the creative resilience required when the launch dust settles.

Meet Yuxuan Liu, a PhD student in English Literature at QMUL, exploring computational literary studies.

Yuxuan's path wasn't a straight line. Four years of undergraduate English led to a master's in Data Science at Durham, before she found her way back to literature, this time asking new kinds of questions.

"I kept returning to the same thing: language. Even when I was working with data, I was still most interested in words, patterns of description, and the way categories are made to feel natural."

Now her research sits at the intersection of literature and machine language, looking at how AI systems shape the way we describe people, nature and what counts as "normal," before those choices disappear into the technology itself.
